Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

John McCain, the liberal

January 30th, 2008 at 03:14pm Pat Cunningham

In the comments section of the post  six down from this one (it’s about Rudy Giuliani), I disagreed with a reader who characterized John McCain as “way left of center.”

But then, lots of conservative Republicans see McCain as too liberal for their tastes. Take, for example, the people who sponsored this ad:

McCain is best buddies with Feingold AND Kennedy on 2 different bills. He works with them, goes out to dinner with them…..signs bills with them. Ick.

McCain goes out to dinner with Teddy Kennedy? The nerve of the guy. He should be deported. What’s the problem with going to dinner with somebody from across the aisle? That’s been happening in Washington for 200 years now. Teddy Kennedy’s been in the Senate for 45 years and has been friends with lots of Republicans. The very conservative Orrin Hatch is one. By the way, Teddy Kennedy sponsored Bush’s No Child Left Behind bill. Any Republican who voted for that bill must be some kind of traitor to his country. I don’t know what you mean by “signs bills with them.” Legislators don’t sign bills. Chief executives do. Lots of bills sponsored by Kennedy have been signed into law by Republican presidents under whom he has served — Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II. Ooh. Ick.

One more thing, just for the record: I opposed the McCain-Feingold bill from the get-go. I think it abridges the free speech rights of Americans. President Bush didn’t agree with me. He signed the bill into law after it was approved by a Republican-controlled Congress.

    1. I stand corrected. Signing a bill when I should have said supporting a bill.
    2. I stand corrected. Going out to dinner and being friends with liberal senators from the opposing party is a good idea. ‘know your enemies” even if your friends are not presidential material (Feingold 3x divorced, Kennedy a poor swimmer).
    3. I stand corrected. I voted for McCain over Bush a few primaries ago and the world may have been better off if everyone else did too.
    4. The no child left behind bill wasn’t so great either. And Kennedy immigration reform was an abomination trying to be an effective compromise.
    5. McCain is perceived as left of center: gang of 14, immigration reform, but perhaps not such a bad choice for prez if +70 is the new +60.

Hey, I’m +60, and it feels like the new +50 (except on days when it feels like the old +80). You’re a pretty mature dude yourself, what with your willingness to “stand corrected” on so many matters. I call you a “dude” on the asssumption that you’re a male of the species. Now, why would I assume that? Nothing you’ve written is a clear tip-off. Go figure.
