The top EDITORIALÂ in today’s Chicago Tribune is headlined: “Mano a mano with Cuba”; and the body of the piece includes this: “Obama was ripped by his opponents this week after he said he would meet with Raul Castro, mano a mano, if Castro agreed to discuss human rights, press freedom and the release of political prisoners.”
In both instances, the Trib seems to have used “mano a mano” to mean either “one to one” or “man to man.” Either way, it’s wrong.
“Mano a mano” means “hand to hand.”
Granted, Obama likely would shake hands with Raul Castro if they met, but I don’t think that’s what the Tribune meant.
UPDATE: I find that I’m perhaps not entirely correct about this matter. (See comments section for rare Applesauce apology.)

It’s one thing for John McCain to incur the wrath of loony right-wingers like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, but it’s quite another for him to receive DEVASTATINGLY SHARP CRITICISM from George Will, a relatively respectable conservative who actually walks upright.
UPDATE: As if Will’s cruel jabs weren’t enough, now McCain has to suffer TAUNTING from Steve Benen over the fact that his grammar ain’t no good, neither.

Another Republican demonstrates his superior patriotism:

Some prominent Catholic guy is COMPLAINING about an endorsement of John McCain by some anti-Catholic guy.
No word yet from God as to whom he might endorse. Mike Huckabee remains hopeful, perhaps even confident.

When Harry Truman was in the U.S. Senate, he famously rode herd on defense contractors who were selling shoddy and overpriced materiel during World War II.
John McCain is NO HARRY TRUMAN.

Gee, I thought it had something to do with national security.
Silly me. Actually, it’s about POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS.
