Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

As a Conservative, I hope Hillary gets the nomination since she would be easier to defeat in the general election. Actually, I think she is unelectable. If W could run again, he’d beat her.
As an American, I hope Obama gets the nomination since he is potentially a better president although it would be helpful if he took an Econ 101 course after reading his economic plan. I am always astounded by the economic illiteracy of intelligent liberals. That last may well be an oxymoron.

Mike: A few things: 1) Yes, Hillary would be easier to defeat in a general election, but no, Bush couldn’t beat her. Not even close. She would bury him. 2) Oh, yeah, those damn libs are economic illiterates. But then, why does the economy invariably do better under Democratic presidents than under Republicans? Because Republicans have had to clear up the mess left by Democrats setting the stage for good economic growth when Democrats succeed Republicans. See Reagan following Carter and Billy Bob following Reagan with a short trip to the Bush. By the way, the economy only improved under Billy Bob when the Republicans got control of congress and W inherited a recession from the Arkansaw traveler. As they say, you can look it up.

Pat should read the book Freakonomics….Bartels and Drum have undeniably factual statistics….but this is a world economy with more factors than just democratic vs. republican.

I’ve read “Freakonomics.” You think I’m an illiterate? The fact remains that Democrats do a better job of handling the economy than do Republicans, despite the GOP’s claim that it’s the party of the managerial class. And please don’t mention Reagan again in this context. The man was the greatest deficit spender in the history of the U.S. presidency. The Republican fiscal mantra: Borrow and spend.

You are not illiterate, brilliant at times even, never boring. While I am troubled by the statistics, I will accept them as merely a statistic that needs more empirical data besides the titular head of office being Republican. However, have your moment. It is your blog, your rules. Enjoy!
