Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

I don’t know what to make of this

I was reluctant at first to mention THIS STORY about the relationship of eight years ago between John McCain and a female lobbyist.

The story seemed at first glance to be one about McCain’s private sex life, which doesn’t especially interest me. Upon reflection, however, the fact that the woman at issue was a lobbyist would seem to make the matter worthy of  public examination.

Whether this thing will seriously hurt McCain politically remains an open question.  I’m thinking it won’t amount to much, but I may be wrong.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign issued a STATEMENT tonight regarding the story in The New York Times.

POSTSCRIPT: Let’s not have it said that this thing is a smear job cooked up by Democrats to make McCain look bad.  Democrats should be the last to want McCain’s path to the nomination blocked.  He’s a weaker candidate than Mitt Romney would have been. Huckabee? Please.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Upon further consideration, I think this story is much bigger trouble for McCain than I first thought. For example, there’s THIS ANGLE from The New Republic.
