Look at what the Bush gang has done to the U.S. military

The popular myth that Republican administrations are more inclined than their Democratic counterparts to support a strong national defense is belied by the FACTS.
And facts are stubborn things, as John Adams observed. (Ronald Reagan once flubbed the Adams quotation, declaring that “Facts are stupid things.”)

I assume the Jesuits did not require a course in Logic when you were an Undergraduate at Marquette. Had you taken such a course of study you would recognize that your comment is not a logical conclusion from the linked post.
Using the military to fight a war and stretching it in the process is not a lack of support. Failing to properly fund the military would be a lack of support. Recall the spending of the so called “peace dividend” during the Bubba administration.

I think what Pat is trying to say is that Democrats are peaceniks…they would prefer solving world issues through the UN and dialogue with rogue dictators and not having a military occupation anywhere…Korea, Germany, Japan…., therefore his argument holds.

Mike and Kaus: You’re both wrong. I’m NOT against having a U.S. military presence in Korea, Germany, etc. (which, by the way, is not analagous to keeping our troops in Iraq where nobody wants them). And stretching our military to a dangerously thin point is, in fact, a failure to support a strong national defense. This administration is the worst thing that’s happened to our military since the LBJ-Nixon war in Vietnam. Scads of retired generals will tell you the same thing.

The hypocrisy of the Bush administration and those who support the Iraq war is amazing. If staying in Iraq is such a high priority and Islamic terrorism is one of the greatest threats ever to this country, then why don’t we have a draft? How can anyone say our military is not stretched thin when we have soldiers going back to Iraq for their second and third tours of duty? And why aren’t we concentrating more troops in Afghanistan and Pakistan where al-Qaeda and the Taliban pose a much bigger threat to the world? This may be the only war we’ve ever fought where the general public is not asked to make any sacrifices.
