THIS piece (which was written before the so-called scandal broke) raises interesting questions about just why John McCain is running for president.
What does McCain promise? Four more years of Bush policies? Ooh! How in the world can the Democrats compete against that?

OK, we’re not sure yet that this is an actual sex scandal, but I wanted to crack wise in the headline anyway.
As I said HERE last night, I don’t know what to make of this deal about McCain and the lobbyist woman. I expect that there will be more shoes to drop before we’ve heard the last of the matter.
Whether it ends up hurting McCain’s presidential candidacy remains to be seen, but I don’t see how it does him any good. At the very least, it puts new focus on his having dumped his first wife and then having very quickly moved on to his second wife, which makes him look like a lothario (see HERE).
Reaction among the mainstream media and prominent bloggers seems to be all over the place. At least one liberal blogger SAYS the piece in the Times was a hatchet job.
Daily Kos has a summary of the “scandal” right HERE.
UPDATE: Politico REPORTS that right-wingers are rallying to McCain’s side.
UPDATE II: The New York Times has RESPONDED to criticisms of its McCain story.
UPDATE III: Kevin Drum of the Washington Monthly has THIS.
UPDATE IV: Oliver Willis SAYSÂ this case reminds him of the media firestorm over Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades.
UPDATE V: ABC SAYS Mitt Romney saw this one coming and had hoped it would break sooner.
UPDATE VI: More HERE on the right-wing response.
UPDATE VII: What if this story was about a Democratic presidential hopeful? Let’s just IMAGINE.
UPDATE VIII: The New Republic has a behind-the-scenes PIECE about how The New York Times handled the McCain story.
UPDATE IX: Some of Mike Huckabee’s backers see the McCain story as the WORK OF GOD in the interest of a greater good. Yeah, sure it is.
UPDATE X: McCain says he doesn’t take money from special interests. But, in fact, HE DOES.
