It might even have been the infamous Vice President Spiro Agnew who popularized the term as part of his anti-media campaign in defense of himself, his boss and the other crooks in the administration. The Nixon gang figured they could strike a populist chord with the booboisie if they cast the news media as a tool of snobby pontificators in their ivory towers with their degrees from fancy schools and their summer estates in the Hamptons or drug dens in upscale apartments. That crap made it all the funnier when Nixon and Agnew separately had to resign in disgrace. Oh, those were great days! I miss Nixon.
