March 18th, 2008 at 10:08am Pat Cunningham
The Illinois senator is SPEAKING NOW in Philadelphia.
UPDATE: THIS GUY says it was the best political speech of the year, but he’s worried that it will be widely quoted out of context.
UPDATE II: Here’s a video of the speech:

Me, too.

A good speech. And from the candidates running, he has the least baggage. But it still has to bother you regarding the sound bytes, they are very racist and preposterous comments. You are agnostic brothers willing to forgive him, let’s hope this is the last of the skeletons in the closet so we can enjoy some racial harmony in this country.

Here’s what right-winger Charles Murray said about the speech in a post on The Corner, a blog site of the conservative National Review:
“Has any other major American politician ever made a speech on race that comes even close to this one? As far as I’m concerned, it is just plain flat out brilliant—rhetorically, but also in capturing a lot of nuance about race in America. It is so far above the standard we’re used to from our pols.”

“the whole world is watching”….it’s just like the 60’s all over again. This is historical, monumental and precedent setting.

I haven’t heard the speech yet, that I’ll do this evening. But I’ve read it.
It is truly an outstanding work. One that will be quoted and studied for many generations to come. It is eloquence like this that shows why this man is destined to become President.

Since it now appears that Florida won’t be voting again…you may be right about that.

He needs to stop throwing grandma under the bus. Whoever wrote that portion of the speech should be fired.

He would have to fire himself. He writes most of his own speeches, and certainly the grandma bit would not have been included in this one without his explicit involvement. I thought that part was especially effective, because it was so deeply personal and it demonstrated that his love for his grandmother transcended his distaste for her racial epithets.

We have to remember that Obama is a politician. He has to remain NETWORKED to his voting public. This huge church and Rev. Wright has a lot of connections to the inner workings of Chicago politics and his voters. Now that he is on the National Level, the church no longer serves a purpose. I keep trying to convince myself that he really doesn’t believe what was going on in that chuch and was doing it for the votes. But come on people, he told a few lies between last week and today. But at least this gets race out in the open so we can get past it and move on to loving one another.

What we tend to forget is that race relations may be the biggest issue facing the country, even though most politicians never really talk about it…until now. I just finished listening to this speech, and it’s brilliant. It may go down as one of the best political and racial speeches ever. It makes me proud to be an American and proud to support Obama. We need more of this and less negative campaigning.

Pat-you may have liked it but I heard from a number of people who did not. You weren’t his target audience anyway. You, Mr. Baseball, hokumboy, equalitykid and my daughter for that matter are supporters and thus predisposed to think the speech was brilliant. I thought it was a very good but not brilliant speech. I’ll grant you he is damn good in that venue.
I’m not his targer either. With a 95% liberal voting record in the Senate, surpassing Hillary, I can’t vote for him anyway.
His target audience had to be the independents and undecided Democrats. I think that is where he fell short.

Target audience? What does politics have to do with the race problems we have in this country? I guess if you are a rich white republican, or a wanna be, race isn’t an problem, but it sure is for the millions of black people in this country.
