Are we ready for another Herbert Hoover?

John McCain seems to want our 44th president to emulate the 31st. At least, that’s what it says HERE.

Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

I believe the Democrats have their new rallying cry.
2. Pat Cunningham | March 30th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I don’t think the Dems will really need a rallying cry, Mr. B. I think McCain is going to be very easy to defeat in the general election. Even his record as a war hero won’t save him. Remember, Bill Clinton, a pot-smoking, draft-dodging womanizer beat war heroes in 1992 and ‘96 (George H. W. Bush and Bob Dole). McCain is inarticulate and is all over the place on the issues. If the economy is bad this fall, which seems highly likely, he’s toast.

7 months to go…we haven’t even started yet. There is plenty of time to analyze the Obama autobiography (and audio tape! ) to discern that he is better suited to running for the President of the U.N. not the USA. Remember George McGovern? Obama is McGovern version 2. My friends, pick a president who has served his country. Mit and Mccain January 28, 2009.

Ooh, boy. McCain and Mitt. That’ll be even more fun.

What’s this I hear about John McCain being ineligible to be president because he was born in Panama?
6. Henry | March 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Did Mitt serve? I know his kids aren’t. Too busy helping Dad in his failed bid for the nomination.

McCain was born in Panama but I believe it’s a non-issue since his father was in the military at the time.

Bob,
He was born in the Canal Zone. Not Panama. There’s a big difference. At the time of McCain’s birth the CZ was a US Territory. That makes him a US citizen.

Did Herbert have PTSD also?

Pat,
True, he’s a “natural-born” citizen, but so was Barry Goldwater in 1964 when he ran. As you probably remember, he was born in Arizona Territory. The NYT wrote a fascinating piece on this “musty” issue last month. Most experts they interviewed said McCain would probably prevail in the Supreme Court, but it’s not a slam dunk.

Schaper: You know, of course, that your dialogue on McCain’s birthplace doesn’t involve me. I can’t imagine that a legal challenge to his citizenship would go anywhere.

I know … I\\\’m just seeking your wisdom.
13. Kaus | March 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Goldwater….Pat probably knew him to. I would like to believe that he would have made a wonderful president. Pat….tell us what it was like to walk with a true giant of logic and common sense.
You guys and Mccain not being a citizen….like is Hawaii a real state? Obama is not American.
14. Bob Schaper - Asst. Metro Editor | April 1st, 2008 at 10:58 am
It’s not a question of whether he’s a citizen. Of course he is. So is Arnold Schwarzenegger - but he’s not eligible to be president because he’s a naturalized citizen, not natural-born.
Whether you like it or not, Kaus, some legal scholars believe that only those people born within the 50 states are able to serve as president. Not territories, not canal zones, not even Washington, D.C., but one of the 50 states.

Lets see if I have this burning issue right Bob, a child born to two US citizens on foreign soil because his father is serving in the US Military is ineligible to become the President? Good luck with that.
16. Pat Cunningham | April 1st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
C’mon, everybody, let’s not deny McCain his rightful citizenship. Let’s not do anything that would deny him the Republican presidential nomination. The guy is our Dream Candidate. He’s going to be easier to beat than Goldwater was. No, make that easier to beat than Herbert Hoover was.
17. hokumboy | April 1st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Bob,
inversely, a child born in the US to foreign born parents who are here illegally could become President.
18. Pat Cunningham | April 1st, 2008 at 5:50 pm
But nobody born more than 6,000 years ago — no matter where — can win the Republican presidential nomination, because them folks don’t think the world is any older than that and they don’t want the age of their nominee to confuse them.
19. hokumboy | April 1st, 2008 at 6:50 pm
So, if though some sort of “end - times miracle ” John McCain gets elected President, and The Rapture happens, does Lieberman become President?
20. Pat Cunningham | April 2nd, 2008 at 6:36 am
I think that’s the way it works, Hoke.
21. Bob Schaper - Assistant Metro Editor | April 2nd, 2008 at 9:01 am
Mike, I’m not saying it’s my position, just that it’s a possible interpretation of the Constitution. Let’s face it, crazier things have come down from the Supreme Court.
And let’s face it, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan were both ineligible to run for third terms … ’cause that’s what the Constitution says. Does it make sense? They were both popular figures who, arguably, could have won third terms. For that matter, why the age limit?
