Comments on: Milestone passed without my noticing

Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don't say you weren't warned. By the way, this blog's name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, "All politics is applesauce."

Pat-I think you can safely assume I was not referring to the psychiatric meaning.
I never knew that you were such a linguist and I am referencing the original latin meaning.

I hate melisma...but I still watch American Idol...Basically, Simon does not pull any punches when giving critiques. While his analysis can be insulting and rude, most viewers appreciate his honesty....similar to you you don't ya think?

OK, Kaus, I can;t resist. The following passage on the word "melisma" is from the Urban Dictionary:

Singing more than one note on a single syllable. To be used in moderation. Abused to the point of absurdity by R'n'B and pop singers (usually but not always female) as a way of showing off vocal capabilities, much like an Yngwie Malmsteen solo. Egregious offenders include Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Boyz II Men.

Sometimes called runs, or vocal runs.

Quit with the melisma, bitch! "Yeah" does not have 23 syllables!

Kaus: I wish I could say that the name Simon Cowell doesn't ring a bell, but I have a vague sense that he has something to do with "American Idol." I once wrote in another forum that "American Idol," from what little I've seen of it, seems to suffer from too much melisma. If you don't know about melisma, don't feel bad. It's not worth explaining here.
