Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Milestone passed without my noticing

The 500th post on this blog came along a couple of days ago without my immediately noticing the milestone.

That’s a pretty good record, if I say so myself, for a part-time enterprise that was born barely 16 weeks ago.

The comments here (including my own addled rejoinders) now number more than 1,320, and the page-views have been measured in the tens of thousands.

I’m sincerely grateful to those of you who visit here regularly — and especially to those who bravely offer comments. I say “bravely” because you risk incurring my wrath if you catch me in a foul mood — which is not uncommon, owing to the fact that relatively few commenters agree with me on anything.

A “tip o’ the hat” to you Pat!
Although not the most well-behaved, you certainly have the most popular blog in the RRStar’s gallery of verbal ventilation!

    Congratulations, but needs more cowbell.

Hoke, Tom and David: Thanks for the kind words.

Congrats Mr. Cunningham…thanks for the daily education. I appreciate your intellect even if you are the Simon Cowell of Political Blogs.

Congrats Pat-It’s a very good forum filled with insightful comments-mostly by me of course.

Kaus: I wish I could say that the name Simon Cowell doesn’t ring a bell, but I have a vague sense that he has something to do with “American Idol.” I once wrote in another forum that “American Idol,” from what little I’ve seen of it, seems to suffer from too much melisma. If you don’t know about melisma, don’t feel bad. It’s not worth explaining here.

Mike: “Insightful”?? Are you sure that’s the word you want? Check your dictionary.

  • 9. Pat Cunningham  |  April 26th, 2008 at 7:36 am

OK, Kaus, I can;t resist. The following passage on the word “melisma” is from the Urban Dictionary:

Singing more than one note on a single syllable. To be used in moderation. Abused to the point of absurdity by R’n'B and pop singers (usually but not always female) as a way of showing off vocal capabilities, much like an Yngwie Malmsteen solo. Egregious offenders include Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Boyz II Men.

Sometimes called runs, or vocal runs.

Quit with the melisma, bitch! “Yeah” does not have 23 syllables!

I hate melisma…but I still watch American Idol…Basically, Simon does not pull any punches when giving critiques. While his analysis can be insulting and rude, most viewers appreciate his honesty….similar to you you don’t ya think?

Pat-I think you can safely assume I was not referring to the psychiatric meaning.
I never knew that you were such a linguist and I am referencing the original latin meaning.

Latin? As some wit once said: I don’t like Latin, per se.
