Is ethanol spawning a global food crisis?

It’s probably sacrilege to raise this question here in America’s Corn Belt, but ya gotta wonder.
THIS GUY says biofuels, especially ethanol, pose the threat of widespread famine.
POSTSCRIPT: THIS OTHER GUY said last year that corn-based ethanol as a substitute for gasoline is not a good energy policy.
POSTSCRIPT II: Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison REGRETS what she calls “America’s Ethanol Mistake.”

Corn has many uses including food and ethanol production, but the largest of these is for feeding cattle. Corn exports have also created new demands and this will most likely lead to more foreign corn cultivation. Corn production varies season to season, but the amount of land under cultivation as well as the per acre yield will certain increase if it remains favorable to growers. Ethanol refineries also produce corn starch, corn oil and corn sweeteners. Not long ago people wrung their hands over the loss of family farms. Willie Nelson developed a sideline as troubadour for the downtrodden farmer. Now we vilify their ingenuity while not demanding more oil production off our coasts and desolate wildernesses. The solution to the high cost of fuel IS the high cost of fuel.

One other thing, Charlie: Do you figure that Kay Bailey Hutchison, the conservative Republican, hates America, too? I thought Republicans loved America more than anybody else.
