Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Knuckledraggers say Obama is the Antichrist

THIS is almost funny.

My favorite part is the claim that the Bible says the Antichrist will be a man “of Muslim descent.” But there were no Muslims until hundreds of years after the Bible was written.

That’s right, there were no Muslims anywhere near Biblicial writings, and it is the same with reference to the phrase ‘Whore of Babylon’ and a non-existing Catholic Church. Nor, would it appear, that John Hagee has ever referred to the Whore of Babylon in reference to the Catholic church. He certainly can speak for himself.

Perhaps these claims of a man coming from muslim decent are from some of the later apacryphal books which are not accepted as part of the Holy Bible and which were written in some cases 100’s of years after the St. Paul’s death.

I don’t think we have to worry about Snopes….we have daily Rev. Wright videos from this weekend creating a train wreck for the Obama campaign. Wow….I’m in shock!

  • 4. Henry  |  April 28th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Hagee is o.k. though, right Kaus.

  • 5. Kaus  |  April 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Hagee is a donor…Wright is a MENTOR… Don’t worry Henry..I know you didn’t watch the videos from last night cause your head is buried in the sand and you don’t want to go back groveling to Hillary.

  • 6. Henry  |  April 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I don\’t believe I have expressed a preference for any candidate. Where did you get the idea you could read minds?

  • 7. Kaus  |  April 28th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Henry…it’s the Hagee mantra that gave you away. Actually, I am not being critical of Obama. It’s Wright stirring things up is which is the problem…don’t you think he should step away from the limelight and let Obama have his time to reach the undecided voters?

  • 8. Menlo Bob  |  April 28th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

There simply isn’t any proof that Hagee is anti-Catholic–unless someone can prove me wrong. And don’t go using that Whore of Babylon stuff on the unsuspecting. I mean actual statements about the Catholic church in being the WOB. I know Sauce ain’t up to it.

  • 9. Henry  |  April 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

This is the first time I have posted on Applesauce invoking the name Hagee. That does not qualify as a ‘mantra’, and gives nothing away as to whom I will vote for. You have no problem with Hagee, right?

  • 10. Kaus  |  April 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

To be honest, Hagee doesn’t really bother me. He at least has appologized for some of his stronger anti-catholic remarks. I’ll let you pretend to be undecided…when I see Mccain hugging Hagee in pictures and donating 29,000 bucks to his Church, we can at least have a logical debate on THAT issue.

  • 11. Menlo Bob  |  April 28th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Kaus, When and where did Hagee apologize for his remarks? Please cite your source.

  • 12. Henry  |  April 29th, 2008 at 6:32 am

    Kaus -

I did some searching and can’t find any reference to an apology by Hagee. Where did you get this information? Also, I’m not ‘pretending’ to be undecided, I’m just not indicating who will get my vote. What is there to debate about McCains contribution to Hagee’s church. It is what it is, and everyone can draw there own conclusions. Please, some Hagee citations.

I was out of town from noon onward on Monday, but it looks like I wasn’t really needed here. Everybody seems to have had fun without me. I think I will soon do an occasional “open thread” where commenters can chat among themselves about whatever they choose. I haven’t done it in the past, because I figured there weren’t enough of you. There’s also an occasional issue with approval of comments from newcomers. (Don’t ask me to explain. It’s a situation not entirely within my control. I’m just a free-lance minion in the vast Gatehouse empire.) Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to see when I logged on this morning that the furniture here was in disarray but nothing was broken. Good work, one and all.

  • 14. Mike Carroll  |  April 29th, 2008 at 7:33 am

Pat-an “open thread” on occasion is a good idea. Also, are you sure that the Reverend Wright isn’t a Republican mole? He sure is the gift that keeps on giving.

  • 15. Pat Cunningham  |  April 29th, 2008 at 7:38 am

No, the media keep on giving — the media that are said by some to be in favor of Obama, the media that are said by some to be giving Obama a pass. It’s absolutely incredible how the media keep beating this Rev. Wright drum, as if it had anything to do with Obama’s qualifications for the presidency.

  • 16. Mike Carroll  |  April 29th, 2008 at 8:10 am

Pat-questions concerning ones character, values and beliefs are legitimate inguiries regarding qualification to be President. Didn’t your Mom tell you that you are judged by the company you keep? Contributing a significant amount of money (26k last year I believe) to a church led by this racist nutcase is a legitimate issue no matter how much you wish it were not.
Even the Tower of Truth published an opinion piece today that states the case better than I can-

To comment 12 http://www.cufi.org/site/PageServer?pagename=media_press_releases#march_26 is the Hagee ‘appology’.

    A big Amen to Mike’s point #16.

Wright loves the limelight…don’t blame that on the media.

  • 18. equalityrkfd=  |  April 29th, 2008 at 8:42 am

He does love the limelight and the media is quick to grant it to him.
Who care what he says, he is no longer the pastor, this is such a non-issue and a distraction.

  • 19. hokumboy  |  April 29th, 2008 at 8:48 am

I hate to even come close to agreeing with Mike and Kaus on anylthing, but on this issue I’ll have to bite the bullet.
Rev. Wright is gleefully throwing Obama under the proverbial bus in order to promote his upcoming book and speaking engagements. It’s going to take a lot of cash to heat and power that $1,000,000 home his parishioners gave him as a retirement gift.
Of course the media is eating this up, but Wright keeps tossing out the chum.

  • 20. Mike Carroll  |  April 29th, 2008 at 8:55 am

It is only those of you who are blindly wedded to the Obama crusade who feel this is not an issue. This will continue to resonate with the independents that are needed to win the General Election and, at this point, I’m not sure how he can put the issue to rest since the good Reverend seems to be enjoying the attention.
Finding myself in agreement with hokumboy is certainly a new experience.

  • 21. equalityrkfd=  |  April 29th, 2008 at 9:47 am

Like that is a bad thing to be for Obama? What is the issue here?

  • 22. Mike Carroll  |  April 29th, 2008 at 9:53 am

I didn’t say it was a bad thing to be for Obama. I’m not but that is not the issue. The issue is that there are Obama backers, and my daughter is one, who are so enamored of the candidate that they are unable to see any flaws whatsoever and thus are blinded to issues which will impact his electability once you get to the general election.

Is it too late for the real champion of the Democratic party to enter?…….Al Gore Jr.
