Uh-oh! Obama critics obsessed with his former pastor aren’t going to welcome this news

The political sophisticates who figure that the flap over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has pretty well doomed Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy had better think again.
The latest Wall Street Journal-NBC poll SHOWS that Americans are more troubled by the relationship between two other men.
Guess who.
POSTSCRIPT: That same poll shows Obama with a national lead of 3 percentage points over Hillary Clinton and 3 percentage points over John McCain. THIS OTHER POLL shows Obama leading Hillary by 8 percentage points and tied with John McCain.
Yeah, that Rev. Wright stuff is just killing him, isn’t it? Maybe he should get out of the race.
UPDATE: Pat Buchanan tonight on MSNBC:
”If President Bush is more unpopular than the Reverend Wright, the Republicans are in a lot of trouble.”
Maybe George Stephanopoulos will ask this question the next time he interviews McCain: “Do you think President Bush loves America as much as you do?
UPDATE II: Jonathan Martin of Politico is out with THIS REPORT, which includes the following passage about sentiments among Republican activists:
“From top to bottom, from McCain down to the youthful campaign and party staffers who work nearly around the clock to get him elected, the working assumption seems to be that the Democratic contest is over and Obama has won.
“Even when Clinton attacks McCain, President Bush or GOP policies, the response is either outright silence or snarky, dismissive ridicule about a failed campaign barely relevant enough to merit a response.”
UPDATE III: And then there’s THIS GOOD NEWS for Obama.

Patrick-I think you are being a touch selective in the polls you cite. I have seen others that show a definite negative hit to Obama from the Reverend Wright association. Heres hoping that the good Reverend keeps his mouth shut and retires to his mansion in his gated community. A real man of the people. It would be cruelly ironic for the first legitimate black Presdidential candidate to have his candidacy torpedoed by a black “man of the cloth”.

Spelling mistake (yes, I failed typing) in the above. Mea Culpa. Don’t send the grammer/spelling police after me.

Mike: The poll of greatest significance, I would think, is the one in which Americans, by a fairly wide margin, are more troubled about McCain’s CURRENT relationship with Bush than with Obama’s NOW PAST relationship with Wright. There is very little difference on policy between McCain and Bush.

One more thing, Mike: The misspelled “presdidential” in your first comment is a mere typo and therefore negligible and morally faultless. However, the misspelled “grammer” in your second comment is no mere typo. It is, by my accounting, a second offense regarding that word and hence is punishable by banishment from Applesauce between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Thursdays in months ending in “r.” A third offense would bring required viewing of all of George W. Bush’s speeches — in one sitting.

I have always considered those who could only find one way to spell a word somewhat lacking in creativity. However, for the rare privilege of being allowed to post on Applesauce, punishment accepted. Mea Maxima Culpa.

I think this blog site uses some sort of spell check that changes what we type into something else. It is a conspiracy by the liberal left media. I swear that I visually scan for typos before I press send…and then mysteriously it changes.

Yeah, Kaus, it’s part of my plot to sap your precious bodily fluids.

Mike: You’re probably old enough to remember when the Chicago Tribune used phonetic spellings for certain words — “nite” for “night,” for example. That practice ended in the ’60s after Col. Robert McCormick, the publisher, died.

Pat, your poll numbers are whacked. Maybe your blog is Faux News…

Kaus: You’re hopeless. There is nothing in that link you provided that refutes the polls I cited. In fact, your link confirms what I reported — that is, the NBC/WSJ poll shows Obama leading Clinton by 3 points and leading McCain by 3 points, and the CBS/NYT poll shows Obama and McCain tied. That’s what I reported, and that’s what your link reports, too. Do you have problems reading, Kaus?

One more thing, Kaus: Why aren’t you challenging the NBC/WSJ poll showing that more Americans are troubled by McCain’s closeness to Bush than by Obama’s relationship with Wright?
12. Kaus | May 1st, 2008 at 11:44 am
1. You ONLY reported NBC numbers like they rule the earth and all its minions. Why not show all the polls and let us see the differences. Most polls disputed your NBC poll. Bias.
2. Mccain is close to everyone….he is even a “gang of 14′ MEMBER.
3. The day Mccain writes a book about Bush being his mentor….
4. Obama LIED about not knowing about Wrights saying those things…McCain doesn’t lie about Bushie
