Comments on: Who was the politician who faulted George W. Bush for chumming with “racist” and “anti-Catholic” evangelists?

Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don't say you weren't warned. By the way, this blog's name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, "All politics is applesauce."

So, is this how we\'ll spend the next six months? My wacko is better than your wacko? For me the bottom line question is: How much has Obama\'s thinking been influenced by Rev. Wright -- who is not someone who visited him from time to time, but was his *pastor* for heaven\'s sake.

And “Reverend” Fred Phelps is my all time favorite example of a neo-con Republican.

You really need to do some homework. Not only is Phelps NOT a Republican -- the man repeatedly ran for office as a Democrat and was a delegate for Gore -- he supported Saddam which is as far from neo-con as you can get.

Fred Phelps:

Democratic Party Phelps has run in various Kansas Democratic Party primaries five times, but has never won. These included races for governor in 1990, 1994, and 1998, receiving about 15% of the vote in 1998.[36] In the 1992 Democratic Party primary for U.S. Senate, Phelps received 31% of the vote[37] Phelps ran for mayor of Topeka in 1993[38] and 1997.[39] Support for Al Gore Phelps supported Al Gore in the 1988 Democratic Party primary election.[40] In his 1984 Senate race, Gore opposed a "gay bill of rights" and stated that homosexuality was not something that "society should affirm".[41] Phelps has stated that he supported Gore because of these earlier comments.[42] According to Phelps, members of the Westboro Baptist Church helped run Gore's 1988 campaign in Kansas. Phelps' son, Fred Phelps Jr., hosted a Gore fundraiser, which Al and Tipper Gore attended, at his home in Topeka.[9][42] Fred Phelps, Jr. served as a Gore delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention.[42][43] Gore spokesman Dag Vega declined to comment; "We are not dignifying those stories with a response."[44]Saddam Hussein In 2003, before the fall of Saddam Hussein during the Iraq War, Phelps wrote Hussein a letter praising his regime for being, in his opinion, "the only Muslim state that allows the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to be freely and openly preached on the streets."[49] Furthermore, he stated that he would like to send a delegation to Baghdad to "preach the Gospel" for one week. Hussein granted permission, and a group of WBC congregants traveled to Iraq to protest against the U.S. The WBC members stood on the streets of Baghdad holding signs condemning Bill and Hillary Clinton and anal sex.[50] After Saddam was hanged, Phelps released a video commentary that stated that both Saddam Hussein and Gerald Ford (who had died the same week) were now in Hell.
  David

"Anti-semitic comments are very prevalent in the Democratic Party." Where's your evidence of that, Kaus. All you've got is one remark from Jesse Jackson. That's not "very prevalent."

Obama publicly rejecting and renouncing things AFTER they come to light in the media doesn't carry a lot of weight. Obama already wrote 2 books hinting at his affection for Marxism. Perhaps he is marxist -lite and not a full blown Castro lover....perhaps he isn't a racist but he spent 20 years around one that is....Obama should have renounced BEFORE he started campaigning....not after he got caught.

Nixon, Billy Graham and anti semitism? Good article Pat. However, Graham didn't say this publicly to his congregation in church. And this is truly a sound bite....personal conversation....it is still wrong....but apparently anti-semetic comments are very prevalent in the democratic party (Mr. Himeytown Jackson comest to mind).

Hamas endorsed Obama...that doesn't make Obama a terrorist lover, but it certainly doesn't make me feel comfortable that terrorists are rooting for him....what is wrong with THIS picture...do I really have to explain?
