Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Bad spelling doesn’t make someone a xenophobe.

Do you suppose that when Applesauce edited a one language paper he was expressing his fear of other countries?

  • 3. Pat Cunningham  |  May 4th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

You’re right , Tom. Bad spelling doesn’t make one a xenophobe. But that stupid sign the woman in the photo was carrying does. I find that lots of people who want English-only in this country aren’t very good at speaking or writing it. I say let’s deport ‘em.

On the other hand, I myself find English language advocates to be clear-thinking individuals who don’t want the USA to turn into a non-country like Canada.

    Oh, Blame Canada,eh?

  • 6. Pat Cunningham  |  May 5th, 2008 at 6:28 am

Great rejoinder, Chuck. You commenters who are less cultured than Chuck and I probably don’t even know that “Blame Canada” (from the movie “South Park”) is the only Oscar-nominated song in history that has the F-word in its lyrics. We need more of that in this country, more F-words in our songs, especially the songs that blame other countries for our problems. Y’know, like when we blame Mexico for everything. By the way, my favorites xenophobes are the ones who get all angry when they’re asked to press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish on the phone. What a terrible inconvenience.

By the way, the shirt worn by that charming woman in the photo amounts to flag desecration. I say let’s hunt her down and beat her up as an expression of our patriotism.

  • 8. Tom McMahon  |  May 5th, 2008 at 9:20 am

Actually, her shirt (blouse?) is OK. You can use patterns from the flag (stripes, stars, etc) as long as you don’t use the flag itself.

The woman’s sign couldn’t be clearer. She isn’t advocating that English be the ‘official’ language, merely that it become the ‘offical’ language–meaning, the language one uses in the offical.

She could be a xenophobe, Pat. You\’re right. Or, she could be a nationalist who understands the unifying power of language.
