John McCain has his own Bill Ayers
May 5th, 2008 at 08:23am Pat Cunningham
The guy’s name is G. Gordon Liddy, and he’s an ex-convict with a record of extolling violence and radicalism.
But John McCain SAYS he admires Liddy for his “adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”
Gee, Barack Obama has never said stuff like that about Bill Ayers.
I wonder if George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson are going to ask McCain about Liddy. Probably not.

G. Gordon Liddy=Bill Ayers. Only a liberal on steroids could assert that.
2. Menlo Bob | May 5th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Good to see you on that Bill Ayers bandwagon. Lots of leftist writers would like Ayers not to count, just like they want Rezko and Wright not to be counted in Obama’s negative column. You know better. Keep posting those Ayers, Rezko, Wright look-alikes. Who knows, maybe one will create a distraction.
3. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 11:12 am
You must be joking Pat. Liddy wears a flag stick pin…Ayers does not!!!
4. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Liddy was taken out of context on ATF sound bite.
Liddy never built bombs that killed anyone.
Liddy is uber-nationalist but that is far better than wanting to blow up our government.
I’ve listened to Liddy’s show….quite entertaining…I think this will pick up a few extra voters for Mccain.
5. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Liddy was a criminal.
6. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Technically Liddy was a criminal, and Ayers is not but admitting to acts that have put people away for life sentences. Obama admitted to taking illegal narcotics for that matter.
Liddy had an amazing talent for pain…putting his hand over a burning candle, can Ayers do that?
7. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Kaus: You wrote: “Liddy had an amazing talent for pain…putting his hand over a burning candle, can Ayers do that?”
That is the single dumbest thing I’ve read in a long time. What the hell does being able to hold your hand over a candle have to with anything other than mental illness? Bill Ayers isn’t exactly an admirable character, but neither, I figure, is he stupid enough to hold his hand over a candle to prove how much of a man he is.
Why don’t you try that, Kaus? You seem dumb enough.
Gordon Liddy is a pathetic creature who seems to have a loose grip on his masculinity and is forever trying to prove to himself that he’s really a macho guy. Head-shrinkers could write whole books on his psychoses.
And Liddy wasn’t just “technically” a criminal. He was four-years-in-the-slammer a criminal. He was a felon.
8. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Pat, your intellect is astounding today….
Liddy was mentally ill? He was mentally tough….
Dumb is….building a NAIL BOMB !!!!!!!!! Where people DIE !!!!
Good grief.
9. Millard Fillmore | May 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Pat, I for one am not ashamed to admit I will be voting for McCain, based on his association with Liddy, who can endure pain. Isn’t everyone??
10. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Oh, I get it, Millie. It’s about Liddy’s tolerance of pain and our endurance of pain under a President McCain. Of course, it all makes sense.
11. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
My original comment about the candle was my attempt at humor…but it reveals a lot about why Pat can justify a bomb maker over a burgler….Pat, you must have served on the OJ trial with that logic. of yours. You guys glorify a bomb making anarchist and make him the patriot of Illinois.
12. hokumboy | May 5th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Kaus,
you forgot to say Marxist!
13. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Kaus: Who has glorified a bomb-making anarchist? Who’s made him the patriot of Illinois? If you don’t quit putting words into other people’s mouths, which amounts to lying, you’re gonna be gone from this site. It’s your choice. Quit lying or be gone. You can have your own opinions, Kaus, but you can’t have your own facts. The facts are that I didn’t say the things you said I said. I have not in any way praised or defended Bill Ayers, so why would you say that I have? I don’t take kindly to people who lie about me. As I say, you stop this crap or I’m taking down your comments. I don’t mind strong opinions from commenters. I invite them. But I don’t invite flat-out lies. By the way, you seem not to know that Gordon Liddy once proposed to the Nixon gang that the liberal Brookings Institution be bombed. Or that he once proposed that columnist Jack Anderson be murdered. The man is one of America’s greatest lunatics. And you’re defending him.
14. Millard Fillmore | May 5th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
No, Pat, it was my way of using exaggeration to show that the statement about enduring pain was a joke. As was my comment about voting for McCain just because he knows Liddy.
15. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Millie: What you say doesn’t excuse Kaus’s lies.
16. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Gee Pat, I said “you guys”….never once did I say “Pat said”. “You guys” meaning the Mayor of Chicago et al.
Pat, you DID think that holding a hand over a candle is so crazy that a guy (Ayers) that made a bomb full of nails wouldn’t do it. I take that to mean that it is more acceptable to make a bome than a simple prank of mind control.
I’ll let you make your retraction however if you want. Your whole arguement about Liddy was pretty weak. But no use getting in a tizzy about it. So…you call me a liar and an idiot….but I take no offense. It’s your web site. Coduct it the way you wish. If you wish me to never post, state it publicly for all to see and I will honor that request.
17. Kaus | May 5th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Pat, I think you do great commentary. I appologize for things getting too heated. I will refrain from anymore posts and let you carry on. Good luck with your blog. Just clean up the Ayers statements and what you were trying to say. Blessed are the peacemakers.
18. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Kaus: Here’s what you wrote: “Pat, you must have served on the OJ trial with that logic. of yours. You guys glorify a bomb making anarchist and make him the patriot of Illinois.”
But nobody here — not me or any of the commenters — glorified Bill Ayers or called him a patriot. You lied, Kaus. Don’t do it again.
You’re free, of course, to continue defending Liddy, the would-be bomber and murderer.
19. Pat Cunningham | May 5th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Those of you who are trying to follow this little drama should make a note that my comment No. 18 was written before I saw Kaus’s comment No. 17.
And I should use this opportunity to take one more shot at Kaus for having written this: “Just clean up the Ayers statements and what you were trying to say.”
I ask you this, people: What in the hell is this guying talking about? What Ayers statements need cleaning up? There are none.
Oh, maybe he means where I said even Ayers wouldn’t be stupid enough to do Liddy’s little candle trick. Well, there’s nothing wrong there. I didn’t defend him or praise him or call him a patriot. I just said that when it comes to candles, Ayers is not the idiot Liddy is. He’s an idiot in different ways.
So is Kaus.
20. Menlo Bob | May 6th, 2008 at 1:10 am
Try as you might, this Liddy business just ain’t gonna stick on to anyone currently alive and running for president. Sorry Sauce.
21. Mike Carroll | May 6th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Pat-I didn’t follow this drama last night in real time and I don’t intend to parse every comment made but I do feel you are being a bit tough on Kaus. Yes, he can get carried away and his writing can get a bit convoluted but I don’t think he has a malignant intent.
22. Mike Carroll | May 6th, 2008 at 6:45 am
BTW-If I go blind trying to read that #%&*#@ Security Code I may have to consider legal action to have your Social Security check garnished.
23. Millard Fillmore | May 6th, 2008 at 7:48 am
Hi Pat - was not trying to excuse anything! was talking only about the hand over the candle comment. the rest is between you and him.
24. Pat Cunningham | May 6th, 2008 at 7:58 am
Mike: All I’ve done is object to Kaus’s lying about what’s been written here. I didn’t give him the boot; I only threatened. But he seems to have taken a hike. I think what I’ll do is welcome him back and simply remove any future comments of his in which he lies about me or commenters. I don’t mind being called a menace to America and the spawn of Martians, but I don’t like being accused of writing something I haven’t written. My attitude in this regard goes back several decades to when some moron falsely argued that I had written such-and-such (and put it in quote marks). It caused me a lot of trouble, but I was helpless to do much about it. I privately challenged this guy to produce, in actual newspaper form, the stuff he said I had written, but to no avail. In today’s Internet age, the problem would easily have been resolved. Anyway, Kaus is welcome back; his prevarications are not. Oh, as for the security code, Mike, it’s beyond my control, as are the other aspects of this blogging software. I’ve had complaints, for example, about the small type. Hey, I only work here.
25. Mike Carroll | May 6th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Your approach works for me. Hey, it’s your blog and you get to write the rules. I just appreciate the opportunity to debate and we have long suspected the menace to America and spawn of Martians thing.
