Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

How many vets will kill themselves today?

As we honored our American military veterans yesterday, most of us gave little or no thought to the thousands of them who have TAKEN THEIR OWN LIVES.

By one count, vets are killing themselves at the rate of nearly 18 a day. But we don’t ordinarily count these as casualties of war.

Pat, Memorial day is not the day we honor our military veterans (which I think should be every day!), it is actually:

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

You’re thinking of Veterans day. That’s okay, Obama made the same mistake yesterday.

Wrong, David. We honor our vets on Memorial Day as well. Decoration Day, as it was first called, was intended to commemorate men and women who perished in military service to their country. Over time, it became an occasion to remember deceased people in general and honor vets in general. Like all holidays, it’s what we make of it.

You are one sick son of a bitch! Compared to same sex and age group in the general population suicides of veterans is actually lower. Please kill yourself rather than slander your betters. Asshole.

Pat, then perhaps you should let the government know — particularly the Clinton executive branch when he issued this executive proclamation May 2, 2000:

Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies

Subject: White House Program for the National Moment of Remembrance

As Memorial Day approaches, it is time to pause and consider the true meaning of this holiday. Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values.

While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to securing our Nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day.

Or when the Congress passed this as a resolution that December.

Calm down, Menlo Bob. I haven’t slandered anyone. So go soak your head.

David: You’re splitting hairs. A lot of people honored the vets yesterday, living and dead vets alike. I don’t give a damn what the proclamation says, thousands of Americans applaused thousands of veterans in thousands of parades yesterday. It’s that simple.

Menlo Bob: One other thing: Why don’t you direct your anger toward the government’s failure to give proper treatment to vets who return home with psychological or emotional problems? Or would that kind of thing slander the vets? How about it, Bob? Oh, and make your reply a tad less profane, if you could. I don’t want to have to take it down.

Pat, I respect yours and others honoring vets as well as those who lost their lives in service, as I said I think we should do so every chance we can.

This holiday has a purpuse, I couldn’t put it any better then Chuck Sweeny did here:

Don, I disagree strongly. Memorial Day is not what you wrote about. I Your essay is fine, and I agree with the points you made, but your words are appropriate on Independence Day.

Memorial Day , formerly called Decoration Day, was set aside by General Logan at the end of the Civil War specifically to honor those who died in that great calamity.

In later years, its meaning was extended to the fallen service members of all our nation’s wars.

That’s what it’s about. Paying tribute to those who gave their lives doing what a president told hem to do. They obeyed willingly and we honor their service by decorating their graves.

Figures lie and liars figure. Comparing the suicide rates between males of the same age who are veterans and a like group of non-veterans shows that the veterans group has a lower suicide rate. You know that because you read my link. Reading newspapers actually make people dumber. You also know that because you have a mirror.

Yeah, it’s all just a lie. Disregard the fact the suicides are reported in all the major papers, including Republican rags like the Chicago Tribune and my local paper, as well as in the Marine Corps News, Stars & Stripes, and other service papers. And disregard the estimate that 1 out of every 5 returning service persons suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome. And disregard the fact the VA has tried to close down VA centers, including those that deal with mental illness. Disregard it all. It’s just some left-wing plot designed to embarrass our Imperial Leader. But our veterans, and their families know what the truth is, despite the right-wing snow job.
