If Obama wins the presidency, who will be the next junior senator from Illinois?

Robert Novak, the venerable Prince of Darkness, SAYS there’s a buzz to the effect that Chicago congressman Rahm Emmanuel (above) might get the appointment to Barack Obama’s Senate seat after the November election.

I still think Blagojevich will give himself the job. It might be the only way for him to escape the mess he’s created.

Interesting thought, Wally, but I have my doubts. I think such a move would be highly unpopular among Democrats — never mind what Republicans would think of it.

Appointing Rahm Emanuel, a DLC stalwart, to the US Senate would be cheered by all the DINO’s who are masquerading as Democrats and their corporate sponsors.
Real Democrats — Democrats from the Democratic wing of the Democratic party — would be appalled.
The New Democrat Movement is Rockefeller Republicanism by another name.
Isn’t one Republican Party enough?
In any event, isn’t it a little bit early to be speculating about this appointment. Is Novak trying to jinx the election by angering the gods with his foolish speculations?

This is a fun parlor game in and of itself.
The Negroes will want one of their own appointed to it; they view it as “their” seat, as it was Obama’s and Carol Moseley Braun’s before that. But that doesn’t mean they will get it that easily.
Roland Burris has said that he would be interested and his someone who fits like an old shoe and would be agreeable to everybody. (I didn’t say “hacks”) Danny Davis is another possibility and I am sure there are others.

“The Negroes”????

Yeah, Leatherneck. What’s with the “Negroes” thing? Besides, your analysis is absurd. In all of Illinois history, only two black people have represented the state in the U.S. Senate (and then not consecutively). So where did you get this nonsense that blacks consider it “their” seat? How do you know so much about the political mindset of the black community? Another thing: Both Moseley-Braun and Obama won their Democratic nominations for the Senate in primary contests against formidable white opponents. In neither case, did the Democratic Party of Illinois bow to its black members and declare the seat a black fiefdom. Nor is it considered so by any prominent blacks — at least that I’ve heard tell.

Yes I know that both CMB and Barack Obama won their primaries. (no kidding, you mean the Senators aren’t appointed anymore?) CMB was an upset vs. Dixon and Obama won only because Blair Hull imploded in the last month. Anyway, the Dems are just looking to fill the seat for 2 years so I think you will see a few ethnic and special interest groups try to get in there. And it’s only 2 years. Let’s be honest, Illinois has only had 1 functioning Senator “on the job” for the last 3 years, at best.
And by the way, I am not a racist so don’t even go there. Negro is an appropriate term, like the Negro League baseball and the United Negro College Fund. They aren’t “Black” in the literal sense and hyphenated terms are silly and often misleading.

Oh, I get it! You’re a valiant crusader against political correctness. I’m impressed.

I am going to vote for the next president based on his/her qualifications and experience.

I putting Chuck’s name into play for the Senate appointment. I failed at getting a Draft Sweeny for Mayor campaign going, So I am thinking: Senate.
