Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Just askin’: Is John McCain French?

This must be another example of the politics of unity that the Big O is promoting.
Since this is the business I am in I do know something about the issue. Essentially, Boeing was on track to beat all rivals for the new military tanker (the old C 130’s) when it was discovered that high level Air Force officials were in the pocket of certain Boeing executives who were involved in the bid. McCain did intervene and was instrumental in throwing the program back open for bidding. Aerbus, who is partnering with Lockheed Martin (a U.S. company and the planes will be built in Alabama) won the bid. It is the consensus of those in the Aerospace business that McCain’s actions saved the American taxpayers billions of dollars and the military got a better product.
Not exactly the implication of the ad is it but it is what happened. What would Gore the Bore say-an inconvenient truth. Better luck misleading the public next time Pat.

As a further note to the above, my company poured millions of dollars into a portion of the Boeing bid on the R&D for the Aerial Refueling. Millions in cost and no return so I am well aware of McCain’s actions and how they benefited the taxpayers of this country but certainly hurt my company. The Big O has talked a big game but there is no history of delivery.

Good info Mike, I had read about the full story. This is another example of why we are so backwards, a 30 second spot with 4 details that don’t tell the whole story by any stretch, and stuff like this is what a large part of the electorate will base its vote on. Sad. And I am not saying it is one sided, although in my experience there is more debate and thought put into who to vote for on the right vs. on Pat’s “My Union told me which box to check” side (Pat being one of many exceptions of course).

I loved the idea of the Lincoln Douglas Debate style format to let these 2 go at it. I think it should be prerequisite for all voters to at bare minimum get informed by watching the debates and actually checking out the voting records for themselves instead of listening to someone else. Not completely controlled debates as per usual, let’s get into the nitty gritty and let them go at it. How could that be unhealthy for our system? Turn a couple lights and the Mic’s on, and see where it goes for 2 hours with no interruption. Sen Obama is an excellent communicator and it should benefit him in that regard, but he will have to back up his oratory, which I am very interested in hearing (As I hope the more emotional side of his supporters also care to hear).

Mike: I, too, thank you for the worthy info. It certainly puts a different perspective on that ad. (By the way, the Obama campaign did not produce that ad, although certainly it would stand to benefit from it.)

Thanks to both on your comments. It has always annoyed the h— out of me when ads like that run with some factual accuracy but no context so that the average citizen can interpret. And both sides are guilty.
