Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Where’s Harry Truman when we need him?

Harry Truman first gained national fame when, as a U.S. senator, he CAME DOWN on profiteers during World War II.

We could use the likes of Truman in our government today, especially in light of a new DISCLOSURE by the BBC about tens of billions of dollars having been lost, stolen or not properly accounted for in Iraq.

One American lawmaker says we’re facing perhaps “the largest war profiteering in history.”

Totally agree, how can one lose billions? If I lose a $5 bill I get miffed.

Gotta love the irony here Pat, does the below ring any bells of our current President? No I am not making the top 10 argument here by any stretch, but I do believe if the stars align this President may get some kudos from the historians for a couple reasons.

“Truman, whose demeanor was very different from that of the patrician Roosevelt, was a folksy, unassuming president. He popularized such phrases as “The buck stops here” and “If you can’t stand the heat, you better get out of the kitchen.”[1] He overcame the low expectations of many political observers who compared him unfavorably with his highly regarded predecessor. At one point in his second term, near the end of the Korean War, Truman’s public opinion ratings reached the lowest of any United States president. Despite negative public opinion during his term in office, popular and scholarly assessments of his presidency became more positive after his retirement from politics and the publication of his memoirs. He died in 1972. Many U.S. scholars today rank him among the top ten presidents.” Borrowed from Wikipedia

A Harry Truman story-During WWII, my Dad was stationed in D.C. after OCS waiting for his deployment orders. The Naval Department assigned him temporarily to the Senate office building. One afternoon he was rushing from one office to another when he collided with another person who was in a similar rush. My Dad is 6′4″ and he looked down to see Senator Harry Truman flat on his back with his papers scattered across the floor. Dad picked him up and helped gather his papers but evidently the language got a bit salty as Truman rushed off to his meeting.
Pat-I am giving you a break from my commentary as I have some business and family matters to attend to.You can rest easy (for awhile).

Mike: I hope you’re not absent for long and that your “business and family matters” are not troubling or of the emergency type. Thanks for the Truman story. By the way, was your dad running interference for the war profiteers? (Heh, heh.)
