So he changed his mind. Sometimes I think we over-react when a politician simply sees the light and comes around to a different way of thinking. To some, it looks “politically expedient”, I realize, but it is also possible that the situation changes and somebody’s opinion changes as well. If it were a politician you liked, it would be okay. You’d say they “evolved”. Examples: John Edwards voted for the war authorization, but was against it when he ran for president; Mitt Romney became pro-life, and my favorite is Barack Obama who reneged on his statement that he would serve out his full term as Senator and not run for President. On McCain, maybe Social Security got more and more insolvent and he finally realized that we have to get control of this entitlement spending/structured debt.

Yeah, but as the video shows, McCain says he’s “never” been for privatizing Social Security, which just isn’t true. As you say, it’s not necessarily wrong for a politician to evolve on a given issue. But it is wrong to lie about it.
