Would gay-bashing boost McCain’s chances?
July 6th, 2008 at 10:51am Pat Cunningham
Conservative commentator Fred Barnes SUGGESTED this morning that John McCain emphatically campaign against gays in the military and same-sex marriage to enhance his bona fides with right-wingers and thereby improve his chances of winning the presidency.
Barnes seems not to recognize that Americans are becoming increasingly tolerant of gays.

Don’t kid yourself into think anything. People are not tolerant, they are just tired of fighting something that is rolling so fast they cannot keep up. Anyone who supports gay rights is an idiot and a fool. And when they meet God they will find out that they are complete idiots..

All hail Gowader, who claims to know the will of God. Let me ask you, pal, if homosexuality is such an awful sin, how come Jesus had nothing to say about it? Zip, nada, zilch. By the way, Gowader (or Wade, as you sometimes call yourself here), are you familiar with the theory that many of those who squawk the loudest about homosexuality are self-loathing gays? Just asking, Dude, just asking.

One other thing, WadeGowader: Where do you get off saying that “people are not tolerant” of gays? Don’t judge the rest of us by your own bigotry. There are tens of millions of us who are tolerant and loving of our gay friends and relatives. We’re not among those whom you see as “tired of fighting something that is rolling so fast they cannot keep up.” Rather, we’re tired of fighting the small-minded likes of you. What are you so afraid of? Yourself?

Well, gay-bashing would definitely raise the value of McCain’s stock among the Glenn Beck-Michael Savage-Bill O’Reilly crowd of 21st century Archie Bunkers. I’m surprised that our friend Wade didn’t roll out the usually reliable Biblical quote of Leviticus 18:22 which states that homosexuality is an abomination that results in an all-expense-paid trip to the flames of Hades. Case closed. No room fro discussion. Of course, these same Bible-thumpers seem to conveniently forget about Bible verses in those same pages of the Old Testament that encourage fathers to sell their daughters into slavery (Exodus 21:7) and instruct the God-fearing to kill sinners who work on the Sabbath (Exodus 35:2).
You’re absolutely right, Pat — Christ said nothing about homosexuality during his short stay on Earth. And I constantly amused (perhaps even a bit bemused) by those right-wingnuts who think Jesus would be on their side of the political spectrum. After all, Jesus had long hair, wore sandals, befriended the poor and the downtrodden, lived at home with his parents, and believed in paying taxes. How many of these traits are consistent with GOP values?

Orlando: Over the years, I’ve encountered some homophobes who say that Jesus once mentioned Sodom and Gomorrah and thereby condemned homosexuality. But they fail to note that the principal sins of S&G were inhospitality and arrogance, which is what Jesus was talking about. In the gospel of Matthew, he says: “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.”
The Old Testament condemnations of homosexuality are found amid admonitions against eating shellfish, getting tatoos, wearing clothing made of more than one kind of fabric and other such terrible sins. The preachers who cite the stuff about homosexuality never put it in context with these other prohibitions to which very few people pay any attention anymore.
I love these religious bigots who don’t even know what’s in the Bible.

What’s God say about gambling? Time has a nice piece on each candidates gambling habits:

I dare say, LD, that only one of the candidates is actually a gambler. McCain plays craps, which is purely a game of luck. Obama prefers poker, where skill and psychology are more important than mere chance.

Come on Pat! You have never won a theological debate with me yet. And you will not today. Being gay is not a part of kingdom principles. We all must be Holy to even be in the presence of God. Being Gay or being a liar, or being a theif will never work. And I am not speaking for everyone but myself and any self respecting person who knows the Holy Spirit. And by the way my highly educated sister is in a so called alternative lifestyle. Or I like to call it, a Fantasy lifestyle. So I do know a little about the brainwashed masses that think God is cool with it. She will soon see it is not worth loosing her soul for.

Where are your scriptural references, Wade? Or do you just make this stuff up as you go along? And why do you say “people are not tolerant” of gays, when obviously you are wrong about that? Again, Wade, why did Jesus have nothing to say about homosexuality? Where are your answers to these questions?

Gowader,
You’d better read some more of Leviticus. Also banned are eating shellfish and anything with a cleft hoof, which means no more crawdads and pulled pork sandwiches for you. Also no more rare meat. Also you are not allowed to shave or cut your hair or have a tattoo. And no nookie during that time of the month! (Assuming you are straight.) Also you will have to buy your pickup truck in cash, since charging or paying usury fees (interest) is also prohibited. You are not allowed to grow two crops in one plot, which will make gardening a bit more difficult. And no more of your cheap, polyester blend fabrics. It’s all right there, brother. Hallelujah!

You guys dont get it yet. Jesus said alot about homosexuality. He simply said to put the flesh to death. This includes all sin of every kind. And I never said ” people were not tolerant of gays” It is obvious that society is depraved an has accepted it in general. What I did say was ” spirit filled people will never accept it or tolerate it. It is an impossibility for them. Just as Christ cannot accept it and tolerate it. All he can do is forgive and cleanse the person if they want it. You need to look at the big picture. Jesus did not talk specifically about alot of things. But all sin falls under the same umbrella. One thing is no less or better than the next. All sin leads to judgement. As for Craig you are still talking old covenant. That no longer applies today for those who are in Christ. For there is no law for those who are in Christ. has beeFor the law n fullfilled in them. You really should ask God to explain this to you. In other words, people who have been spirit filled do not want to sin anymore.

Wow, Wader! You belong in the Witless Protection Program. You say things and then deny having said them. You claim to have made comments here that you didn’t make. You seem to know almost nothing about scripture, but you claim to be a Christian. You claim to know the mind and will of God, but you offer nothing substantive to support that claim. You write non-sentences of gibberish, like this one: “has beeFor the law n fullfilled in them.” Wow, Wader! I hope they’re taking good care of you there at the home.

Pat I never claimed to be the best writer in town. And I have never once claimed to be a christian. You have taken on this and assumed it for yourself. I am not religious at all. Simply spirit filled thats all. I quess you will never understand. But you will see that your religion will never work. All you are doing is what you can to get out of a relationship with Christ. Its ok though you have alot of company.
Why dont you get spell check installed on this window. some of us dummies could us it.
15. Craig Knauss | July 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Gowader says, “As for Craig you are still talking old covenant. That no longer applies today for those who are in Christ.” Sorry to inform you, but those sections have never been repealed. That includes the entire book of Leviticus, which is where your anti-gay references came from. Since you claim to be Christian, maybe you should learn to quote from the Gospels, for a change. How about the Beatitudes? Ever hear of them? I’ve been a practicing Christian for over 50 years. Nearly that long for my wife. How long have you been at it? It appears you still need some work.
16. gowader | July 7th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Craig; I am not sure what religion you are? You do sound Catholic though. And what makes you think I am a christian. I have never made that claim. And just for the record there is no law for those in Christ. If you read Act 10 verse 9 you might see that. The simple fact is you are not spirit filled. You have done alot of reading and going to church for 50 years. But you do not know Jesus personally. Acts 1 verse 5 explains it all. I am sorry to say but if you are not baptized in the spirit you do not know Christ. I do not belong to any religion at all. I have simply surrendered my will over to the will of God, and have been filled with the Holy Spirit. So you see the old testement has never been repealed but it has been fulfilled for those in Christ. Do you get it yet!!. Or do you think the beatitudes will get you into heaven, or maybe the pope can, or someone else?
17. Craig Knauss | July 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Gowader,
I am Protestant. So is my wife. And you don’t know Jesus any better than I do, so cut out the arrogant pretence. And do not preach to me or anyone else. You are not qualified. The Bible is more than a few passages taken out of context. Try reading and comprehending more of it, especially the New Testament. And Christianity, or whatever you practice, is more than just the Bible. Try living to the teachings of the Bible, not just using parts of it to justify your narrow-minded, judgmental views. So save your sanctimonious attitude for someone else, someone who might care what you have to say. Fred Phelps perhaps?

For people like Pat, unless you agree totally with his narrow views you are then said to hate them. It only works with issues they favor. No one uses the word heterophobia because that side of the argument isn’t as hysterical. Pat, try holding your breath until you get what you want–see if people are willing to embrace your ideas that way.
