Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Mass ignorance in an “Age of Information”

July 7th, 2008 at 08:26am Pat Cunningham

I don’t know that I understand everything in this video, but I find it provocative — and scary.

To title something ‘mass ignorance’ while saying you don’t understand everything is mildly humorous. I don’t understand the scary part, unless by that you mean an educational system that refuses to adapt. Never before in human history has information been easier to access. Basing an educational system around memory and single method learning systems seems unwise.

Bob: You seem not to have noticed that the title of the video is “Mass Ignorance in an Age of Information.” I didn’t give it that title; the producers of the video did. There are lots of things you seem not to notice, Bob — including the fact that there are lots of things you seem not to notice.

The point I think you missed Bob is this: reading teaches people to think critically. To be able to determine the validity of the information becomes much more important now that we are in the age of information. There is a lot of information out there, much of it with a lot of vested interest, being able to think critically allows a person to see it for what it is, not what the talking heads on screen tell you it is.

Reading is reading. Critical thinking is something else. Example; Applesauce can read, applesauce is incapable of thinking critically.

Milton: I’ll thank you not to encourage Menlo Bob with your little French-language courtesies.

The blogger who created that goofy video….go to the web site. rujournalism.blogspot.com His first post basically says “workers of the world unite! What a communist…

As far as the video, bogus…..competition to top colleges is incredibly intense with ACT, SAT scores, let alone grade point averages. I believe reading is still quite mandatory. Reading is reading….kudos Menlo Bob
