Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Philistines rejoice at low poll ratings for Congress

Conservative bloggers all across the fruited plain (like THIS GUY, for example) are soiling themselves in delight at a new Rasmussen poll that shows less than enthusiastic public regard for the current Congress.

The situation is such, according to THIS OTHER blogger, that congressional Democrats have reason to worry about the November elections.

The reality, of course, is that these periodic polls showing low ratings for Congress have been widely misread ever since the Democrats took over in January 2007.

It seems not to occur to some folks that a lot of the disdain for Congress stems from the public’s disappointment at the failure of lawmakers to more firmly stand up to the Bush administration in general and to end the war in Iraq in particular. In other words, it isn’t mostly  a condemnation of the Marxist surrendercrats who won their seats in fixed elections.

For all the negative stuff on talk radio and in the right-wing blogosphere about Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and their troops on Capitol Hill, polls STILL SHOW that Democrats are likely to make big gains in the congressional elections this November.

Besides, as we see HERE, public disapproval of Congress isn’t quite as wide or deep as the headlines would suggest.

And this poll will actually mean something when residents of one state/district get to vote for representatives of other states/districts. Until then let the other bloggers…WHARRGARBLE.

I’m not shocked that Pat would try to defend a congress that as of July 4th passed 260 laws—the lowest over the last three decades.

Kaus: If you’ll re-read the post — very slowly and very carefully — you’ll see that I wasn’t defending this Congress (for which, by the way, I don’t have much respect either). I was merely pointing out what the polls say and what they don’t say.

Mr. Cunningham, I think it is your middle comment that led me to state that perhaps there is more to it than standing up to the war in Iraq as a reason for disatisfaction….it is the do-nothing congress…just as bad as the republican fiscally irresponsible congress the year before.

Big talkers….no real action. In fact the biggest joke is passing FISA after whining about it the year before. And just as I expected, a democratic congress when really pressed, won’t send our young men home from Iraq this year or next.

The only thing correct in your comments is the “marxist surrendercrats”. But that shouldn’t come as a suprise to you.

Kaus: You still haven’t pointed out where I tried to defend Congress. I don’t like its record either. Again, I merely suggested that the polls have been widely interpreted.

You have clarified you position. The original article didn\’t but no matter. In fact you have never been critical of Ms. Botox. At least you use \"marxist\" in your blog posts now.

  • 7. Pat Cunningham  |  July 10th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Kaus: What the hell does Botox have to do with it? Don’t be such a sexist pig. Remarks like that are the stuff of dimwits who have nothing cogent to say about the subject at hand. How would you like it if I made disparaging comments about the looks of your wife, mother, sister or daughter?

  • 8. Kaus  |  July 10th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Mr. Cunningham, I think you need to clarify the governance of your web site. If disparaging comments about looks are not welcome, then you should state it on your banner page.

Regarding my wife, mother, sister or daughter….I would consider them off limits as well. In fact, I would consider comments about your looks off limits, even though you are probably better looking than the average man.

Back to Nancy Pelosi, I know the purpose of your site is to point at the flaws of the Conservative view point and you have no time to focus on the train wreck on the liberal side.

  • 9. Pat Cunningham  |  July 10th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Kaus: I should not have to warn that disparaging comments about a person’s looks are not welcome here. It’s a simple matter of common decency and common sense. Nor is it political correctness, lest anyone suggest otherwise.

    Political correctness–oh please!
