Here’s why people like me never get polled
July 14th, 2008 at 02:22pm Pat Cunningham
I strongly favor the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama, but there’s very little chance that my opinion — or the opinions of people who share with me a certain distinction — will be registered by Gallup, Rasmussen, Zogby or any of the other prominent pollsters.
The problem is that I don’t have a land-line phone.
This gap in the typical polling model most likely results in undermeasuring public support for Obama.
HERE’s the story.

Pat, Wow.I thought that all people your age had a hard time learning that new-fangled technology like cell phones. I am surprised that you use a cell phone exclusively. I would have thought you only used a land line with a rotary dial.

The first phone I can remember at our house when I was a kid was a wall phone with no dial (the operator said “Number, please”), and it was a party line. Everybody listened in on everybody else’s calls. That was during Harry Truman’s presidency. I was born during FDR’s third term, but he was gone before I ever used the phone. Today, I’m hardly the technophobe you make me out to be. Hey, I’m able to run this damn blog from my home, ain’t I?
