And then we should rename the Holocaust Museum for Heinrich Himmler

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, the North Carolina Republican, has INTRODUCED an amendment to name an international HIV/AIDS bill for Jesse Helms, the recently deceased champion of bigotry.
What a sick joke!

Just shows you how out of touch Repugnants are!

Ah the purity of the liberals. Can I also safely assume that you also condemn the career of Democratic Senator Sam Ervin who opposed almost all civil rights legislation during his time in office or does he receive a special dispensation because he chaired the Watergate hearings. Just asking.

So let me get this straight. Senator Obama is considered a progressive for his fund raising effort for “The King of Pork” Klan Member Robert Byrd to buy himself votes in WV, but Elizabeth Dole is out of touch for memorializing Helms to get a leg up in succeeding him? Sorry, it just sounded like the exact same “Whore” like political behavior to me.
From the Obama 08 Website:
“It’s time to put an end to the say-anything-to-win politics of the past”
Does endrosing the biggest porker in history who happens to have a record similar to Helms not apply here gentlemen? What am I missing? Is it safe to say Mr Obama is also out of touch Equality as Mr Byrd can most certainly be termed as a “champion of bigotry” or is it different when it is on your side of the aisle?

C’mon, Mike. The stuff you mention is no comparison to naming an AIDS bill, for God’s sake, after Jesse Helms. I know of no civil rights bills that were named for Sam Ervin. I’m not a fan of ANY segregationist, no matter their party affiliation or their respectable achievements on other matters. But Jesse Helms was especially despicable.

Optimo: Bob Byrd eventually renounced his Klan affiliation. Jesse Helms never renounced much of anything. Naming an AIDS bill for Helms is like naming a resolution denouncing pork-barrel spending for Bob Byrd. Both notions are ridiculous. And besides, what does Obama have to do with the Helms AIDS bill?

Actually, I though naming a gay rights marriage act after Jessie Helms would be more appropriate. To name an International HIV/AIDS Bill after Mr. Helms would limit his legacy.
And while we are at it, I think we should rename an airport in Minnesota - The Larry Craig Wide Stance International.
And why stop here? We could rename the Heinz Ketchup company to The Ronald Reagan Vegetable Gardens.
I am in full support of Republicans getting their recognition for such worthy causes.

Then I trust you think that “Aw Shucks Sam” was equally despicable.
BTW, I think if you do a little background work you will find that Helms, later in his life, was quite active in the HIV/Aids programs to assist the victims of that disease. There is some foundation to the proposal by Dole.

Mike: Helms relented a bit regarding AIDS in Africa, but not in America, where, according to him, AIDS was mostly a gay thing. And, yes, Sam Ervin’s segregationist politics were despicable. But he later disowned his opposition to Brown v. Board, and Wikipedia has this to say about him:
“Some historians consider Ervin’s position to be one of “cognitive dissonance” because he opposed federal legislation to combat race-based discrimination, but did not do so in harsh, ugly terms. While he once maintained that Americans were entitled to “their prejudices as well as their allergies,” he did not seem to be motivated by prejudice himself, but more by his suspicion of federal power.
“Meanwhile, Senator Ervin’s strict construction of the constitution also made him a liberal hero for his support of civil liberties, his opposition to “no knock” search laws, the growing intrusions of data banks and lie-detector tests as invasions of privacy. In 1966, Senator Ervin played a major role in the defeat of a constitutional amendment to make prayer in public schools compulsory.”
And then, of course, his leadership on the Watergate committee was exemplary.

Pat: The Presidential election is how many weeks away? Everything has to do with Obama Sir, just turn the television on and watch the swooning and front row “Beatle Groupie” screaming and fainting on your side. To me, Obama being a hypocrite is more important than Elizabeth Dole naming a bill for her longtime friend. Dole’s political sellout to Helms in order to get votes struck me as familiar to Obama’s same sellout in support of Byrd (Helms and Byrd being the same creautures). Both ridiculous, but I find it slightly more concerning for our future president (Who says he is different from the rest) to be scavenging for votes to someone like Byrd when he has such a large pot of gold as far as campaign contributions. He doesn’t even need it and he is willing to sell out. Rings Clintonesque, and that I don’t like, just like I didn’t like the DNC taking chinese duckets for Clinton. I was hoping Sen Obama was the guy in the advertisment. If he doesn’t have a problem with the Klan Association, then how about the pork at least? No pork bill named after Byrd, but everything in the state of WV is and considering one of the few pieces of legislation Obama does have his name on (With Coburn) is to fight pork, I think he should have passed this one up, just as Elizabeth Dole should have zipped her lips.
Q, don’t foget about these:
Ted Kennedy Bridge of Abandonment
Clinton “Definition of IS” Stogey Museum
The William Jefferson Frozen Cash Ferry Line

I think it should have been made easier on everyone, and named after Rock Hudson, Robert Reed, or Magic Johnson.
