Comments on: Bush and McCain adopt Obama’s positions

Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don't say you weren't warned. By the way, this blog's name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, "All politics is applesauce."

Knauss--re-read comment 6 again. He was implying that Obama <b>wasn't,/b> going to negotiate with dictators. Not that it was desirable to meet with them.

"So Obama wanted to meet with dictators without a purpose?" Do you have a problem with Obama "meet(ing) with dictators"? Nixon did it. So did Reagan. And Bush I. And Bush II has done it, even though he conceals most of his activities. Remember, places like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, etc., are hardly democracies. This is called “diplomacy”, Bob. Meeting with your adversaries can sometimes prevent conflict. Or do you have a problem with that too?

Speaking of false claims, Menlo Bob has falsely claimed Obama said negotiate with the leaders of these nations, when he claimed he was going to meet with them.

A meeting per say does not necessarily mean negotiating or appeasing someone. It is the attempt to put your cards upon the proverbial table and show them this is how it is going to be according to you. That is not negotiating.

If I were the President, I would be willing to do the same. To a certain degree, it is done by the President every day. Though the President may not be face to face with a leader of a foreign country that we may dislike or distrust, he dictates in the media what is the agenda of the Administration toward that nation. No negotiating is needed for that.

Reagan did it with Russia, Nixon with China, and Clinton started it with Libya. Diplomacy works, that is if you are willing to attempt it. However, it does not mean appeasement or negotiating. Both of these words mean you are attempting an agreement.

Partial hijack of the thread Patrick-I see that all 3 anchors for the three major networks will go with Obama to Iraq. I don't recall that happening on any of McCains visits? Just asking.

The above link dated <b>May 16, 2007</b> says the following:
At long last, the United States and Iran announced May 13 that they will engage in direct public bilateral talks over Iraq. From Washington, it was the office of Vice President Dick Cheney and the National Security Council that broke the news. From Tehran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad confirmed that the two sides will meet in Baghdad in a few weeks, most likely at the ambassadorial level. That makes these talks as officially sanctioned as they can be.

Already there have been two brief public meetings -- albeit on the sidelines of two international conferences -- between senior officials from the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the U.S. State Department in March in Baghdad and in May in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The upcoming meeting in Baghdad, however, will be the first official bilateral meeting.

Face it, you tried to falsely claim that Bush was doing what Obama advocated. Anyone viewing the previously attached video would know that isn't the case. This isn't a change and it isn't the first time that the <a href="http://www.stratfor.com/united_states_iran_and_iraq_negotiation_process" rel="nofollow">US has negotiated with Iran"</a>.

Bush and McCain were against talks with Iran without preconditions. Now Bush is singing a different tune. Face it, Bob, Obama is smarter than either of those guys, which isn't saying much. By the way, has McCain figured out yet that Czechoslovakia no longer exists?

Obama said that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1dSPrb5w_k" rel="nofollow">HE would negotiate</a> with world class thug governments. THAT isn't Bush, McCain or Hillary would do. Sending someone else is always the first step, not the last one. Now if you're going to say that Obama changed his mind, well I can't argue with that.
