Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Report from a childhood friend

For no other reason than that he was a neighbor of mine when we were growing up in Freeport, Dan Balz (above) of the Washington Post takes the Applesauce spotlight this morning for a REPORT on his travels abroad with Barack Obama.

(Actually, there’s another reason: Dan’s pretty good at what he does.)

(I should also tell you that Dan and I weren’t the only kids in our neighborhood who became journalists. There were two others, and we all lived only a few houses from one another. It must have been something in the water.)

( It should come as no surprise that my career turned out to be the least distinguished of the four, though I am the oldest of the bunch.)

    That’s pretty neat.

Based on this story–ignored by all your intrepid media bretheren–your headline seems interestingly appropriate (although not for the purpose you intended).

    Who are the other two?

  • 4. Pat Cunningham  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 5:16 pm

66Pretzel: The other two are Dan’s brother, Doug, and your sister, Claudia. By the way, how’re you doing?

Menlo Bob: Who cares about the latest of the National Enquirer’s umpteen stories about John Edwards having an affair? I don’t write about that kind of stuff here, just as I haven’t bothered with any of the stuff about John McCain cheating on his first wife.

Ignore it at your peril my friend. It’s the sort of thing that a slow-footed media continually misses in favor of printing dull-witted opinion pieces. There used to be a time that newsmen were interested in printing news that people would actually pay to read. Now that honor goes to the obituary pages.

    Bob,

The documented fact that former Illinois Republican congressman Henry Hyde had an affair with a married woman didn’t stop him from getting re-elected in heavily Republican, “family values”, Dupage County. In fact, he lead Clinton’s impeachment process. Or maybe Democrats are held to a different standard?

Bob: You and the other political bottom-feeders can continue to get their jollies from the garbage they read in the National Enquirer. The rest of us will stick to the real issues. Oh, you might want to try hanging around airport restrooms, too. There ought to be a lot of good action in the Twin Cities during the Republican convention.

Thanks Sauce for making my point. When Larry Craig soiled himself in public newspapers had little difficulty forming a parade. When Mark Foley showed his true colors we couldn’t get enough of him mincing above the fold. But those had a purpose. Now that the Dems 3rd leading presidential candidate is caught up in a scandal we’ll just have to bide our sweet time until it becomes screamingly obvious to those expected to have a nose for news. The Brits seem to be the only english speaking people with the wits to assemble a proper newspaper.
