Why don’t the mainstream media cover the trashy stories found in the National Enquirer?

One of our regular commenters here at Applesauce expressed dismay the other day over the failure of the mainstream media to follow-up on a sleazy story in the National Enquirer about the “love child” of some Democratic politician.
The guy should be more careful about what he wishes for. Some of the stories in the Enquirer and the other supermarket tabloids are about, purportedly, the scandalous goings-on among conservative politicians he probably admires.
HERE’s a more colorfully-illustrated treatment of the subject.

Granted, those stories wouldn’t be appropriate to report on, however, the Edwards matter is different in that Edwards was seen by a number of people leaving the hotel room of the woman who supposedly had the child. Edwards’ refusal to answer questions begs additional follow up.
If publishing stories that turn out not to be true disqualifies all other stories from being considered, the Wen Ho Lee and Iraq chemical stories in the New York Times should put it on your black list.

If I follow your logic you’ve just established one of your favorite websites, the Daily Kos, as contemptible. See the link.

Daily Kos seems to have evolved in the three years since the story to which you’ve linked. Hey, we all evolve. For example, I used to think that John McCain was an honorable and classy guy. Now he’s in bed with the same sleazeballs who slimed him in South Carolina eight years ago and the same theocrats he denounced eight years ago as “agents of intolerance.” Apparently, there are no depths to which he won’t sink in his effort to become president. Too bad. As I say, he used to be a decent guy.

Pat- there is evolution and then there is mutation. Daily Kos is the latter, not the former.

Hey look, reporting going on over here.
“The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards — whom he did not immediately recognize — in a hotel men’s room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.
“What are they saying about me?” the guard said Edwards asked.
“His face just went totally white,” the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child.”

Your commitment to the news is heartwarming. Wonder why newspaper circulation is in a death spiral?

Well, considering that he was in the room from 9:45pm Monday until 2:40am Tuesday, they might have just been watching Keith Olbermann on TV. What do you think was going on?
His leaving the hotel was more like an escape. Edwards did not leave through the lobby. He went down a stairwell and into a bathroom, possibly to comb his hair. Or maybe to call hotel security to escort him out of there without the reporters all over him. Security did go down there and he was escorted out. Coincidence?
A google search on “John Edwards” + “Rielle Hunter” turns up only the undernews media, blogs, and your article. Not a peep from CBS, NBS, ABS, CNN, pMSNBC. Not a word from NYT, LAT, WaPo, etc. What is amazing to me is the media blackout on this story.
Obama visited Edwards at his southern mansion a few months ago. This morning, NBC discussed possible running mates for Obama. Curiously, Edwards was not among them. The Breck Girl was, until last week, a potential running mate for Obama, and the MSM is dutifully protecting him. THAT is a story in and of itself.
