Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

This is just ducky!

House and Senate lawmakers AGREED Monday to ban a family of toxins from the manufacture of toys and other children’s items amid concerns that kids can suffer ill effects from merely chewing on rubber ducks.

But President Bush, ever the tool of the oil and chemical industries, opposes the ban and may veto the measure.

A federally-funded study conducted in 2005 found that male babies born to women with high levels of the targeted toxins in their blood exhibited changes related to low sperm count, undescended testicles and other reproductive problems. Other studies have connected some of the suspect chemicals, known as phthalates, to liver and kidney cancer.

“…low sperm count, undescended testicles and other reproductive problems.” Well there you have it, Bush just wants to breed more conservatives and that’s why he will veto the bill. Now if he can just get rightwing mothers-to-be to chew rubber ducks….

Actually, the EPA maintains a huge list of “toxics” based on sometimes ridiculous tests that have been conducted over the years. I’m not always sure how applicable the tests were. And I think there are a lot of things out there that should be listed, but aren’t. Look how long it took to get updated emissions standards on trucks and buses. Anyway, a veto will help protect our (Chinese) rubber duck manufacturers.

Expensive rubber ducks mean the terrorists win.

    Pat, did you see this?

LD: I did see that stuff about the shooter at the Unitarian Church in Knoxville, but I chose not to write a post on the matter, mainly because it’s an isolated case concerning a deranged man, and I don’t want to paint all right-wingers with the same brush I would apply to this one nutcase. You see, I’m a reasonable, fair-minded guy.
