The tragedy of paying heed to the last knucklehead who offers you advice

Jonathan Alter (whose mother, Joanne, was a casual acquaintance of mine in a campaign in which we both worked 38 years ago) has a GOOD COLUMN in Newsweek, lamenting the sad transformation of the John McCain he once knew and admired.

It is a good column and it makes strong points on the type of President McCain would be if this strategy works. What bothers me the most is George W. Bush has strictly followed the advice of two or three advisers and look what’s happened. I really don’t think Bush is such a bad guy, but he’s abdicated his responsibility for making the final decision on major issues. He’s simpy in the wrong job and doesn’t have the fortitude to go against his advisers. McCain may be doing the same thing.

George W. Bush had to listen to those advisers; he was way over his head when it came to becoming the President.
