The national backdrop against which Barack Obama and John McCain will appear tonight at a California megachurch shows a new RISE OF THE EVANGELICAL CENTER on the political spectrum.

  1. That\’s because all the old Christians are dying off. The newer ones are rejecting the bigoted values of the old style religion.

  2. Bigoted values? I hope you don\\\’t mean the right to life, marriage to be between only one woman and one man, or the dignity of working for a living, Those ideas are biblical ideas. The bible is to be the standard of what it is to follow Jesus, or as we term it today–to be a Christian. Some younger believers that I know who fall into that 56% are, for the most part, biblically and historically ignorant.

  3. Ward: Since you seem to think of yourself as more than a little familiar with the Bible, I have two questions for you: 1) What did Jesus say about homosexuality? 2) What’s the meaning of this passage from Deuteronomy?:

“If your brother, the son of your father or of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the spouse whom you embrace, or your most intimate friend, tries to secretly seduce you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods’ unknown to you or your ancestors before you, gods of the peoples surrounding you, whether near you
or far away, anywhere throughout the world, you must not consent, you must not listen to him; you must show him no pity, you must not spare him or conceal his guilt. No, you must kill him, your hand must strike the first blow in putting him to death and the hands of the rest of the people following. You must stone
him to death, since he has tried to divert you from Yahweh your God.”

  4. Jesus never mentioned pedophilia, bestiality, cannibalism, rape, wife beating or any number of other sins. I guess they are all ok right?

We all have violated the laws of Moses…..all 613 commandments, not just the 10 on the stone tablets…and the law was pretty clear on homosexuality. Romans 3:20 – Why then did God gave the Old Testament? It was given, not to justify men, but to give men the knowledge of sin. It showed that “all have sinned” (v23). This is proved by numerous quotes from the Old Law itself (v9-18).

  5. Craig Knauss

Jesus never mentioned stupidity either. But he did say we shouldn’t judge others unless we wanted to be judge ourselves. And he said that “he who is without sin can cast the first stone”. I haven’t seen any proof that either of the above commenters is without sin. Or are even close to it. But they do have the “judgmental” aspect covered. So I assume that neither of these characters eats pork or shellfish, borrows money or loans it, shaves, or performs any of the other Deuteronomy no-nos.

The reality is that the majority of “faithful” people that I know, work with, etc. have had their fill of the in-your-face evangelists. The religious right doesn’t speak for every Christian. Just the bigots and hypocrites.

  6. Craig is certainly correct in that Jesus did not want Christians to be judgemental and hypocritical.

However, Jesus mentioned stupidity….everyone that doesn’t listen to His sayings is a foolish man Matthew 7:26

I don’t think anyone is ‘casting stones’ in their posts…just acknowledging what is a sin according to the Bible. All have sinned and no one can live up to the laws of the old testament.

You have to admit, the laws of Moses were incredibly wise for their day to avoid disease and to get along with each other. Even the avoidance of Shellfish !!! Many have died due to eating those nasty creatures.
