Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

I don’t get it

There’s something peculiar about this passage from a political memo issued yesterday:

“Obama’s stadium address on Thursday — the 45th anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech — will result in effusive and overwhelming press coverage.  On Thursday, Obama will give a great speech, as has been his trademark.  The press will sing his praises and remark on his historic address and Obama’s place in history.  For example, The Associated Press today published an article comparing the historic nature of the addresses – a week before Obama’s speech.  This coverage will be impenetrable and will undoubtedly impact the polls. We believe Obama will see a significant bump, and believe it is reasonable to expect nearly a 15-point bounce out of a convention in this political environment.”

The memo came from the McCain camp.

But where’s the snarkiness? Where’s the crap about celebrities and elitism? Where’s the so-what attitude?

The tone is one of almost defeatist resignation in its anticipation of a big bounce for Obama in the polls.

Could it be that they’re setting the bar rather high so that they can crow if Obama’s bounce falls short of that?

I don’t get it.

You’ve nailed it. Set the expectations that Obama should expect a huge bounce from the convention. Then, when it doesn’t happen, or when it’s not as high as predicted, claim that his campaign is faltering and go from there.

The same strategy will be used around the time of the first debate. McCain’s camp will claim that they can’t hold a candle to Obama, that Obama is such an incredible speaker, blah blah blah, and then the bar is set so low, that all McCain will have to do is show up and he “wins.”

That will be the SOP from the GOP.

Or is McCain trying to somehow suggest that the media is responsible for turning Obama is the second coming of MLK Jr.

McCain can suggest anything he wants. The problem for him is 75,000 people are going to show up for his speech. Tough to blame the media for that. By the way, I hope there isn’t a live band, so the wingnuts can’t use that preposterous excuse.
