I think Joe Biden’s speech tonight at the Democratic Convention was good, but not great. He made a few verbal flubs and failed, though not by a lot, to achieve the heights that Bill and Hillary Clinton reached with their respective speeches.
Hence, Barack Obama’s unscheduled appearance at the podium just minutes after Biden concluded his remarks gave the affair an emotional lift that would otherwise have been lacking. It was part luck and part smart planning.
And it perfectly set the stage for Obama’s speech tomorrow night before a crowd of 75,000 at Denver’s big football stadium. The expectations are great, which means the challenge Obama faces is huge. Anything less than carrying the ball for a score will be a letdown.

It was 150 years ago today that Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas met on a makeshift stage in Freeport, Ill., to debate slavery.
Little could they have imagined that an African-American would GAIN the presidential nomination of a major political party exactly a century and a half later.

Avid supporters of John McCain are CHORTLING today over news that Barack Obama will deliver his big speech Thursday night before a backdrop of Greek columns.
Just imagine! Greek columns! What arrogance!
But they forget that George W. Bush also spoke before fake columns at the Republican convention of 2004, as we see HERE.
Those poor saps in the McCain camp. Their candidate can’t remember how many houses he owns, and they can’t remember the setting in which their party’s presidential incumbent delivered his nomination-acceptance speech just four years ago.
And this gang thinks it’s qualified to run the country?

Fairly or not, presumptive presidential nominees get to control, to a certain degree, the rhetoric peddled from the podium at their party’s convention. And so it is with the Barack Obama campaign and this year’s Democratic conclave.
There’s word today that the Obama camp deleted one line from Dennis Kucinich’s speech last night. It was a zinger.
Referring to conservative Republicans, Kucinich reportedly was prepared to say: “They’re asking for another four years — in a just world, they’d get 10 to 20.”

It says HERE that the Texas senator is seen as a way to draw more women voters to the Republican ticket.
The 65-year-old Hutchison (profile HERE) is a former college cheerleader and TV news reporter. She’s been married twice, and is pro-choice on abortion.
Hutchison was indicted in 1994 on charges of using state resources for political purposes, but she was acquitted in a trial in which a judge ordered the jury to find her not guilty.

THIS is too, too funny. (Be sure to click on the second link in this piece.)
UPDATE: Thanks to Applesauce commenter LD for the link to THIS STORY about how the guy with the sexy song was turned down when he offered to endorse Barack Obama.

Politico’s Jeanne Cummings EXPLAINS how Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden as his running mate hampers John McCain’s selection of a vice-presidential candidate.
Personally, I still very much doubt that McCain will go with Mitt Romney. He’s too supercilious, too rich, too much of a flip-flopper and too much opposed by certain elements of the Religious Right. I’m still betting on Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
