Applesauce disclaimer on Sarah Palin
August 30th, 2008 at 02:28pm Pat Cunningham
Politics can be an ugly business, as most candidates for high office will attest — and as Sarah Palin soon will discover, if she hasn’t already.
I’ve wrestled with myself over whether to publish this post and reluctantly have decided that I should. The gist is that there’s a lot of ugly buzz about Palin’s personal life flying around, and I want no part of it.
In my posts of the past 24 hours, I’ve endeavored to confine my criticisms of Palin to political matters. My comments have been sharp, but none of those barbs have had anything to do with the personal lives of the governor or her family. As far as I can tell, they’re lovely people, even if I sharply disagree with Palin’s political views.
I understand that by merely raising this issue I might somehow encourage readers to go hunting for rumors about Palin that go beyond her political record. That’s not my intent, but I also recognize that the nasty scuttlebutt eventually will gain wide circulation. We’re a nation of gossips. But I want to pre-emptively warn against giving any credence to scandalous rumors that have not been fully documented.
I won’t traffic in unproven allegations about personal lives, and I’ll delete any comments from readers who aren’t so particular.
Sarah Palin doesn’t deserve to endure the kind of crap that’s been thrown at Barack Obama over the past year or so. If something unflattering, but provable,  about her political career arises, that’s fair game. Everything else should be out of bounds — and it will be on this blog.Â

I applaud you for taking the high ground. I agree that her politics are what is most important. How she stands on the issues is what should be first and foremost in the minds of voters.

Here’s an allegation you won’t hear about Sarah Palin: She visited wounded troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center–last year, when she wasn’t attempt to curry favor with national media.
3. Menlo Bob | August 30th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Well I certainly muddled that. What I meant was that an allegation that Palin didn’t visit troops would be false.
4. Pat Cunningham | August 30th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Wake up, Bob. Obama has visited wounded troops without fanfare on many, many occasions. Don’t forget that McCain was not far from Landstuhl on one of his European trips and didn’t visit the hospital. I can’t believe that you’re still clinging to the categorically refuted lies about Obama and Landstuhl. What a bunch of crap. Next you’ll be bringing up Ayers and Wright and the rumors that Obama is a Muslin. You right-wingers are a weird bunch. You’re going to be so disappointed on Nov. 4.
5. Menlo Bob | August 30th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Did you see me post anything about Obama?
6. Pat Cunningham | August 30th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Yes, by implication, with that crap about “curry favor with national media.” I was born at night, Bob, but it wasn’t last night.
7. Craig Knauss | August 30th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
And why do we keep hearing about Landstuhl? The VA has a LOT of hospitals with a LOT of wounded veterans that need help. How many of those facilities and vets has McCain visited? And why has he voted to cut veteran benefits? Don’t the men and women who have become seriously injured fighting for our country deserve the BEST treatment available? Or do some of you people support Bush’s closing of VA hospitals during a war?

Allow me to echo the sentiments expressed in Comment #1. If something as malicious had come out about Obama or Biden, you can bet your sweet “The Spin Stops Here” coffee mug that Hannity, O’Reilly, and the other smear-loving toadies at Fox News would be on the story 24/7.
9. Menlo Bob | August 30th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Sauce sez…’You right-wingers are a weird bunch. You’re going to be so disappointed on Nov. 4.’
Relax Sauce, your boys have a
very generous8 point bounce coming out of the convention!!! That’ll hold. No need to panic.10. gowader | August 30th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Yes I agree Bob: The convention was the winning factor. I see no reason whyMcCain should continue anymore.
And did you see any empty seats. I know they did their best to make it look like a packed house.
But do not tell Pat this, he will throw a hissy fit.

The only reason I read this blog anymore is because of Menlo Bob….you rock dude.
I get tears in my sentimental eyes when I read that Pat is going to hold back from scandalous rumors..or is that tears of laughter.
OK, rather than rumors let’s talk reality. While Palin kills the bridge to nowhere, Biden has a son who works as a lobbyist. So much for ‘a change we can believe in’.
And I equate Obama ‘s Thursday night speech about closing corporate tax loop holes and tax havens to a Miss USA pageant runner up who answers the interview question on how to solve world peace…not a lot of substance.
Get your game on Pat….Biden will insert both feet in that first debate with Palin.
Obama and Biden(is Delaware the same size as Rockton?)….2 politicians with zero executive experience.
12. Pat Cunningham | August 30th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Kaus: You left out a third politician with zero executive experience — McCain. Typical.
13. Pat Cunningham | August 30th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Speaking of conventions, there’s no need for the GOP to feel jealous about the big crowd at Obama’s speech. The Republicans are perfectly capable of filling a stadium with screaming people. They did at the Superdome during Katrina.
14. Kaus | August 30th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
I do believe democrat Ray Nagin preferred filling the stadium over utilizing 2000 school buses. Nice call Ray…
Ray Nagin….more executive experience than Obama.

Since Pat loves grammar errors so much by the conservative bunch in this blog, perhaps he can explain “Obama is a Muslin” in post number 4.
16. Pat Cunningham | August 30th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
As any editor or journalism professor could tell you, Kaus, that is NOT a grammar error. The grammar in that comment is perfect. My mistake is what’s called a typographical error. The fact that I know how to correctly spell “Muslim” is well established. My problem was in failing to proof-read my comment before publishing it. It will happen again with other words, I’m sure. But I try especially hard to avoid grammar mistakes. Nobody’s perfect in that regard, but I’ll put my record up against yours anytime.
17. Kaus | August 30th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I am not so sure Pat. Perhaps you really meant muslin.
Muslin is most typically a closely-woven unbleached or white cloth, produced from corded cotton yarn. Wide muslin is called “sheeting”. It is often used to make dresses or curtains but may also be used to complement foam for bench padding. Muslin breathes well, and is a good choice of material for clothing meant for hot, dry climates.

Kaus,
Your point is ?
19. Menlo Bob | August 31st, 2008 at 12:04 am
Sauce, your comment 13 was hysterical.

it is disappointing that progressive always take the high road that pat is talking of when not even identifying the missteps in gov-lite’s life but the republicons never do so–they accused hillary and bill of MURDER, keep stating the fear mongering lie about Barack’s religion (he is more Christian than the misleading “family values” crowd whose polices hurt people) and made a federal case of a lie about a bj and ignore the bush/cheney/mccain lie about a war that cost tens of thousands of lives. I think whoever knows of sarah’s personal failings should share them much like more should have been made of coke-head bush’s druggie days and his AWOL days hiding out from the Guard unit his daddy got him into..I also think until the dems learn to play the dirty politics of bush’s brain (rove–mccain’s new best friend) and exploit mccain’s ancient AGE–he is an OLD man–and his lack of intelligence (893 of 898 in his Naval Academy class that daddy got him into without sufficient scholastic record) and little sarah machine gun’s using her political position and power to get a former brother in law fired from a state job…….
21. kaus | August 31st, 2008 at 12:07 pm
To Barryfan….
1. “Progressives ALWAYS take the high road”….what planet are you from Barryfan….and here I thought Christian conservatives can by hypocritical. You just proved that Progressives are no better.
2. You state that Bush was a coke-head? Did you know that Obama has a very similar background when it comes to drug habits….
3. Getting a former brother in law fired? He didn’t get fired.
4. Are you saying the Monica Lewinsky scandal was a lie? You are the epitome of the +80,000 fools who showed up on Thursday nite in Denver.
22. kaus | August 31st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
To post 18 Hokumboy…
Pat says “Obama is a Muslin”. This equates to Obama is a polyester, or Obama is a cotton, or Obama is a wool. Muslin is a fabric. Improper grammar. He should have said Obama is LIKE muslin.
So what? Well, since Pat only picks on conservative grammar, I thought I’d remind him of his hypocritical attitude.
23. Pat Cunningham | August 31st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Kaus: Barryfan never said the Lewinsky scandal was a lie. He said the Repubs made a federal case out of Clinton’s lie about his relationship with Lewinsky. You need another course in remedial reading.
24. Kaus | August 31st, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Berryfan doesn’t state that it was Clinton’s lie. Pat can certainly imply it, but he doesn’t know for sure….in the mean time, Barryfan won’t get corrected on the poor writing skills that he/she possesses by Pat (king of grammar) due to his/her political bias.
25. Pat Cunningham | August 31st, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Oh, I know for sure. Barryfan said: “the misleading ‘family values’ crowd… made a federal case of a lie about a bj…” See, the lie was about the bj. That was Clinton’s lie. Back to remedial reading, Kaus.
26. Kaus | August 31st, 2008 at 1:07 pm
In summary, it is ok when Clinton lied….and he lied a lot, because he is a democrat. Whatever Barry said or didn’t say…..he is a hypocrite just like 100 percent of the worlds population. Nobody escapes hypocrisy.
27. Henry | August 31st, 2008 at 6:34 pm
How about W’s lies about Iraq and the 4,000 dead, and tens of thousands maimed. Now that’s impeachable.
