Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Some conservatives aren’t sold on Palin

Thanks to Roy Edroso at Alicublog for his collection of skeptical right-wing comments on John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate.

“Some conservatives aren’t sold on Palin”, but the truth is in the campaign donations….August doubled all other months for the Mccain campaign. 10 mil in 2.5 days after the Palin announcement. Too bad Pat can’t go to Pollster.com for a few days to counter those results.

“Too bad Pat can’t go to Pollster.com for a few days to counter those results.” Whatever that means. UPDATE: I’m still trying to figure out that stupid remark. Why can’t I go to Pollster.com? Is it closed down? And what do you mean by “counter those results”? Counter what results? The results of McCain’s latest fundraising? What would Pollster.com have to do with that? You make no sense, Kaus. None. It isn’t just a matter of my disagreeing with you. How can I disagree with something so nonsensical?

    Kaus: Four questions:
    1) Do you honestly believe that the $10 million McCain raised from the far right after the Palin pick is going to swing the election?
    2) Do you realize that 50 percent of Americans think Palin is unqualified to assume the presidency if the need arises?
    3) Do you realize that American women generally have not been enthused about the Palin pick?
    4) What’s your problem with Pollster. com? It’s an independent Web site that analyzes all the pertinent polls. Do you dislike it just because it shows Obama with a sizable lead in electoral votes? Or are you so obtuse that you think the presidency will be decided by a national poll? It doesn’t work that way. Ask Al Gore.

Lets face the fact, that the Democrats dont know what to do now that Obama is no longer the superhero and underdog.

Obama’s no longer the superhero? The crowd he drew last week would suggest otherwise. So would the TV ratings. So would the polls showing strong public approval of his speech. And you also say he’s no longer the underdog? When was he the underdog vs. McCain? That hasn’t been the case since well before the two of them wrapped up their respective nominations. Besides, why would he want to be the underdog. The idea is to win. Keep trying, gowader. Some day you’ll hit upon something sensible. We’ll be waiting.

    Pat…
    1. No, but it has more value than a poll from cnn.
    2. The 50 percent who say she’s unqualified is obviously a subset of the 59 percent overall who know enough about her to form an opinion. 41 percent don’t know enough about her yet to form any opinions.
    3. I don’t know that answer, not sure what poll you are looking at.
    4. You touted Pollster.com. I agree it is an excellent site and truly informative regarding the only thing that matters…the electoral vote.
Mark Blumenthal at Pollster.com says we have to wait for the GOP to finish up the week to get any meaningful numbers.

Kaus is right. The independent voters are not educated yet and do not yet have sufficient input to form a hard opinion. Let’s wait a couple weeks for the dust to settle, when the conventions finish and Gustave blows over and then we’ll see some good data.

Once the public gets to know Sarah Palin, I think those numbers will change and she will appeal to women voters. (professional women, suburban women, soccer moms, etc)

But here again, Pat pretends that he knows what women want and that all women vote as a monolothic bloc. (when he says: “Do you realize that American women generally have not been enthused about the Palin pick?”) No, I do not realize that. And we will not assume that or jump to any conclusions. We do realize that this is the way liberals want it to be.

I will commend Pat for not giving play to these Palin stories which don’t amount to a hill of beans. Many liberals out there want another Tom Eagleton debacle or a Dan Quayle, but what will they do if it doesn’t work out that way??

Leatherneck: You seem not to know the difference between “all women” and “women generally.” Those two terms do not mean the same. Not even close. When you say “Pat pretends that he knows what women want and that all women vote as a monolothic bloc,” you are absolutely full of crap. No demographic group votes as a monolithic bloc, and I would never suggest otherwise. I made that very point not long ago when I wrote here that there is no such thing as “the Catholic vote.” As for Palin, the fact remains, according to the polls, that women are considerably less enthusiastic about her than men are. Don’t put words in my mouth, especially such stupid words.
