Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don't say you weren't warned. By the way, this blog's name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, "All politics is applesauce."

Millard: The key word in the headline is "like," which means the same as "such as." Hagee was referrring to stay-at-home dads in general, and the McCain camp says Todd Palin is a stay-at-home dad. The piece to which I linked is intended to diss Hagee, not Todd Palin. I've been a stay-at-home dad myself.

Pat - in comment #5 you say, "nobody ever said Hagee was referring specifically to Todd Palin."

Well. Then what are we to make of your headline?

"Pastor Hagee says a stay-at-home dad like Palin’s husband is 'a bum' and 'worse than an infidel' " ?

I'm always fair, but rarely balanced. On a serious note, that whole overrated business of "balance" in news coverage has led to many journalistic atrocities over the years. Too many news stories have been ruined with the equivalent of balancing coverage of the space program with the views of flat-earthers. And, of course, the Fox News Channels claims of fairness and balance are downright Orwellian.

Mike: Seriously, I've decided to lift my ban on much of the stuff concerning the Palin children, since those matters are now part of the national political conversation and have even been publicly addressed by the McCain campaign. Consider the bizarre spectacle of McCain ceremoniously embracing the young man whose only claim to fame is that he knocked up Bristol Palin without benefit of wedlock. In retrospect, however, I don't regret having banned mention of the initial round of baseless rumors last weekend concerning parentage of the Downs Sydrome child. I can hardly be accused of political partisanship in opposing any exploitation of those rumors on this blog.

Mike: Three things: 1) Mainstream media have carried stories about the McCain camp threatening a lawsuit against the Enquirer over this story. 2) The story does not directly involve any of the Palin children. 3) In my comment above and in my comments on the initial Enquirer stories regarding John Edwards, I have expressed skepticism about Enquirer stories in general. (In the Edwards case, of course, the Enquirer subsequently was vindicated, if that's the word for it.) My virtue remains relatively untarnished and exemplary.

Wasn't it just a few short days ago that Patrick warned us that Applesauce would not condone the spread of malicious rumors on this blog? It appears there is a short shelf life on Patrick's virtue.
