Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Pastor Hagee says a stay-at-home dad like Palin’s husband is “a bum” and “worse than an infidel”

The Rev. John Hagee (above left), a FORMER PAL and endorser of John McCain, has no use for dads who stay at home to take care of the kids while mom goes out and works.

He SAYS they’re going to hell.

Excuse me has anyone actually seen the news he is a union employee who works the north slop most of the year and for 1 month a year he is a commercial fisherman. He isnt’ a stay at home dad and if he was why does that make him Lazy when was the last time this Pastor stayed home with his kids. It is not an easy job. homework, chores, dinner, Try being a stay at home parent with a infant before you judge and Mr. Palin isnt even a stay at home dad.

    Pat,
I am a regular listener to John Hagee and dont ever remember him calling out Mr. Palin by name. I believe this just another piece of MADE UP NEWS from a leftist paper. I think Ill see what is happening on a more conservative website…..like Cnn or MSNBC.

  • 5. Pat Cunningham  |  September 4th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

concerned: Thanks for stopping by. Incidentally, nobody ever said Hagee was referring specifically to Todd Palin. He was talking about stay-at-home dads in general, and the McCain camp said this morning that Todd Palin is a “stay-at-home dad.” Do you know how to connect the dots? Apparently not.

  • 6. Pat Cunningham  |  September 4th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Darla: The McCain people say that Todd Palin is a “stay-at-home dad.” Now, they wouldn’t lie to us, would they?

  • 7. Milton Waddams  |  September 4th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

The reason Hagee says this is because he believes women should be barefoot, pregnant and chained to the stove.

  • 8. Menlo Bob  |  September 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I don’t think McCain was endorsing Hagee. Hagee was endorsing McCain (since retracted).

The McCain people say that Todd
    Palin is a “stay-at-home dad.”
    Now, they
wouldn’t lie to us, would they?

Not over Palin’s Assembly of God Tongue Talking, Slain in the Spirit Dropping, Catholic Hating Rear End would the McSame Camp

Ever Lie to the Albanian People !!!!

Menlo Bob: Nobody said McCain was endorsing Hagee, but McCain was pretty chummy with him until the media brought up some of Hagee’s intolerant statements. Finally, McCain had to make a clean break, at which time Hagee withdrew his endorsement.
By the way, Bob, I’ve been looking for you all day. I wanted to remind you of your enthusiasm of a few weeks ago for the fine journalism practiced by the National Enquirer, especially in the John Edwards case. Well, lately the Enquirer has been reporting some nasty stuff about Sarah Palin and alleged marital infidelities. Why haven’t we heard from you about that? Did your Enquirer subscription run out? Have you been shunning the supermarket check-out lanes? What’s up?

    LOL :)

Wasn’t it just a few short days ago that Patrick warned us that Applesauce would not condone the spread of malicious rumors on this blog? It appears there is a short shelf life on Patrick’s virtue.

  • 13. Pat Cunningham  |  September 5th, 2008 at 7:26 am

Mike: Three things: 1) Mainstream media have carried stories about the McCain camp threatening a lawsuit against the Enquirer over this story. 2) The story does not directly involve any of the Palin children. 3) In my comment above and in my comments on the initial Enquirer stories regarding John Edwards, I have expressed skepticism about Enquirer stories in general. (In the Edwards case, of course, the Enquirer subsequently was vindicated, if that’s the word for it.) My virtue remains relatively untarnished and exemplary.

I would counter that you seem to have a Clintonian definition of relatively.

  • 15. Pat Cunningham  |  September 5th, 2008 at 8:05 am

I have many Clintonian inclinations. Hide your womenfolk.

  • 16. Pat Cunningham  |  September 5th, 2008 at 8:19 am

Mike: Seriously, I’ve decided to lift my ban on much of the stuff concerning the Palin children, since those matters are now part of the national political conversation and have even been publicly addressed by the McCain campaign. Consider the bizarre spectacle of McCain ceremoniously embracing the young man whose only claim to fame is that he knocked up Bristol Palin without benefit of wedlock. In retrospect, however, I don’t regret having banned mention of the initial round of baseless rumors last weekend concerning parentage of the Downs Sydrome child. I can hardly be accused of political partisanship in opposing any exploitation of those rumors on this blog.

Pat-no problem, as long as its Fair and Balanced of course.

  • 18. Pat Cunningham  |  September 5th, 2008 at 9:13 am

I’m always fair, but rarely balanced. On a serious note, that whole overrated business of “balance” in news coverage has led to many journalistic atrocities over the years. Too many news stories have been ruined with the equivalent of balancing coverage of the space program with the views of flat-earthers. And, of course, the Fox News Channels claims of fairness and balance are downright Orwellian.

Pat - in comment #5 you say, “nobody ever said Hagee was referring specifically to Todd Palin.”

Well. Then what are we to make of your headline?

“Pastor Hagee says a stay-at-home dad like Palin’s husband is ‘a bum’ and ‘worse than an infidel’ ” ?

  • 20. Pat Cunningham  |  September 5th, 2008 at 10:52 am

Millard: The key word in the headline is “like,” which means the same as “such as.” Hagee was referrring to stay-at-home dads in general, and the McCain camp says Todd Palin is a stay-at-home dad. The piece to which I linked is intended to diss Hagee, not Todd Palin. I’ve been a stay-at-home dad myself.
