Aiming for the gut, not the head

HERE’s an interesting analysis of how the McCain campaign is seeking instinctive rather than rational reactions from voters, concentrating on biographies rather than issues.
You might call it visceral politics. It’s the last available strategy when you can’t win on the issues.

Pat, the reality is Palin excites conservatives BECAUSE of her steadfast stance on issues that are of core interest to us, not in spite of them.
Though I do appreciate your offer to join the enlightened society that has come to rescue us from our naitivity, I have to politely decline.

Liberals love Obama because of what they think he is
Conservatives love Sarah Palin because of WHO she is
and despite all the lies and smears of the left on Sarah Palin in the last two weeks, we know a great deal more about what she believes in and what she’s accomplished than the media has reported on what Obama believes in or what he has accomplished ever.
Apparently, and I’m piecing this together by what I’ve seen on CNN and read through Pat’s blog…Obama is for change…or something
That’s apparently intellectually good enough for guys like Pat.

You now have a chance to elect one of our great heroes - John McCain -and a great American. He will be an exceptional president. He will have with him an exceptional woman who has already proven that she can reform and that she can govern.

Conservatives are confusing Sarah Palin the role model with Sarah Palin the VP candidate. For those of you who believe she is a good role model…great..enjoy the moment. Unfortunately being a good role model doesn’t translate into a good VP / Probable President.

Bouncy: Here’s one of the things we now know about who Sarah Palin is: She’s someone who “has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a ‘per diem’ allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.” Read more about it here:

For all who complain about Gov. B. residing in Chicago instead of the Governor’s mansion in Springfield it doesn’t appear that much different in Alaska, except she’s from the other political party.
8. Optimistic1 | September 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am
So to recap, Sarah Palin sells the jet for 2.1 million, saves the state $370,000 in travel expenses last year alone by doing so, and I am supposed to be upset when she takes per diem instead of living in the mansion? Is it cheaper for the taxpayers for her to live at home and get paid per diem or live in the mansion?
Keep reaching, you are making this Gal look better and better. I hope this cracks open the seal on the expense accounts of all elected officials so we can compare her pretty conservative story to that of someone like Mrs. Pelosi asking for a 757 for her use. We should go after all abusing the system, both sides. Palin has proven historically that you are barking up the wrong tree with her. I bet there a bunch of people in elected office on both sides that are getting nervous the public will look into them next which is great! I bet Biden is a little uncomfortable knowing he is next for expense snooping, if the press will go there.

Pat
Read the article
She hasn’t broken a single law and after reading the story…I believe both you and the author don’t understand how Per Diem works
Palin, actually saved taxpayers thousands by under billing what she was allowed to under Alaskan law for Per Diem (she could have charged for her children, but didn’t)
You guys keep striking out…considering your junior senator has been involved in legitimate scandals…perhaps you should check those out before making wild accusations based on someone else’s shoddy reporting
How about doing some shoddy reporting of your own on The One?
Just a suggestion

Just because an activity is legal doesn\’t mean that it is necessarily ethical. You\’d think that a politician who professes to be a reformer would be concerned about waste and abuse not just for the big items (jet airplanes) but would look out for the little ones as well. Doing the right thing doesn\’t just mean what\’s legal. Values go deeper than what the legislature puts on the books for laws.

Jon
Give me one, just one example of reform that Obama did that even comes close to ANYTHING Palin did.
I’ll take Palin’s record of reform: Killing the Bridge to Nowhere (Hey, I’m only reporting what the Alaskan Dems said), selling the state plane, firing the executive chef, turning in her own Party chairman oh…AND taking less per diem than she could have to ANYTHING the Messiah did.
The truth is, Obama was downright NEIGHBORLY with corruption in Chicago.
Obama has never tried real reform (and don’t give me examples of voice votes)…he simply played right along with the dirty politics as usual in Illinois.
14. Jon | September 9th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Bounce…
I heard about some of those things Ms. Reformer did…over and over and over again. I’m kinda waiting for something new….
Also, trust me when I say I would never suggest that a politician has messianic qualities. I’m pretty sure they put their pants on one leg at at time…just like you and me. I’m not of the thinking that politicians should be deified for their work (you know highways and overpasses named in their honor). There are plenty of real, honest to goodness citizens who do much more good than most politicians. (Stan Campbell comes to mind). As for who is the best reformer…hmmm I think I’ll pass on that argument, but I do think my guy is a heck of a lot more civil and respectful than your gal
15. Uncle Bouncy | September 9th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Jon
Come on…your guy Barry is in full panic mode..he just called Palin a pig
Stay classy Libs!
it’s just a matter of time before this one is in the books for the GOP
and the Dems have no one to blame but themselves this time
P.S….you failed the test on providing one example of reform by your guy
16. Pat Cunningham | September 9th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Bouncy: Obama DID NOT call Palin a pig. Using an aphorism that’s older than I am, he said, (without ever referring to Palin):
“John McCain says he’s about change, too – except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics. That’s not change. That’s just calling the same thing something different. You can put lipstick on a pig – it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years.”
Clearly, the references were to the Bush administration’s policies.
17. Pat Cunningham | September 9th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
One more thing, Bouncy. Last October, Rick Pearson (a former Rockford Register Star reporter, incidentally) had a story about McCain in the Chicago Tribune that included this passage:
“McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health-care plan, he said it was ‘eerily reminiscent’ of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
“‘I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,’ he said of her proposal.”
Funny thing, Bouncy, but nobody accused McCain of calling Hillary a pig.
18. Pat Cunningham | September 9th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Bouncy: Thanks for bringing that pig remark to my attention. I’ve made a full-blown post out of it — highlighting, of course, the McCain camp’s hypocrisy. Maybe I should put you on the Applesauce payroll. You could keep an eye out for right-wing silliness I can ridicule. You’d be good at that. Hell, you could just make up stuff, as you usually do.
