Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Pentagon says U.S. is not winning in Afghanistan — “and we’re running out of time”

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff SAYS, “We can’t kill our way to victory” in Afghanistan.

It’s about time somebody talked truth to Congress and the White House about the real front in the vaunted War on Terror.

Running out of time? Where’s the clock on this one? Some people like to invent new rules for stuff that don’t have rules to begin with.

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military conceded it was not winning the fight against an increasingly deadly insurgency in Afghanistan and said on Wednesday it would revise its strategy to combat militant safe havens in Pakistan.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee success in Afghanistan would require more civilian effort beyond the military fight.

“Frankly, we’re running out of time,” Mullen said.

“I’m not convinced we are winning it in Afghanistan. I am convinced we can,” he said, offering a sober assessment nearly seven years since U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban after the September 11, 2001, attacks.”
Apparently Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the “timekeeper”…are you saying he’s “full of it”?

This is where our troops and resources should have been concentrated the entire time. This is where Bin Laden and the terrorists behind 9-11 have been operating. Instead we’ve wasted time, resources, lives and money in Iraq which had nothing to do with 9-11 and in fact was at odds with Bin Laden. Obama has been talking about this for some time and now his views are supported by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Let’s forget about partisan politics and support this effort which will take infrastructure rebuilding and economic development as well as more troops. Time Magazine had an excellent piece several months ago on how to win in Afghanistan.

“This is where our troops and resources should have been concentrated the entire time.”

I’ll second that, Too bad so many people
out there are so invested in the political
CYA game that they have blinded themselves from the reality of the situation.

We’ve allowed Osama Bin Laden to not only get away Scot free with killing thousands of Americans and causing billions in damage……

We’ve allowed him to become a poster boy for terrorist around the world.
He is, THE Anti-American, The Super Power Killer and the hero of the down trodden worldwide.

    Hell of a job, Gerogie

And Hell of a job as well partisan republicans for your faith in GWB who along with his misadministration ignored the advice and expertise of those who are paid to defend us.

Of course the REAL problem is not GWB who will soon be gone
    (Thank God)

The real problem will still be around after Jan. 20th 2009

Those that decided that GWBs political rear end was more important than the lives of our fighting men and women.

More important than bringging justice to
Osama Bin Laden who to this day threatens and rails agaist us to multitudes of cheering fans.

    Heck of a job republicans

If you want to capture Osama bin Laden vote for McCain. McCain claims he knows how to catch him, but will only tell us once he’s President.

    Cheers.

LD is correct. McCain said he \"will follow bin Laden to the gates of Hell.\" So obviously he knows where bin Laden is. Or maybe McCain is conceding they will both wind up in the same place on Judgment Day. Time will tell.

Mr. Baseball sez: “Time Magazine had an excellent piece several months ago on how to win in Afghanistan.”

Gee, think of how much faster we could have won WWII, if only Time magazine had advised Eisenhower, Halsey, and MacArthur.
