Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Is there a gay pride parade scheduled in Houston this weekend?

Just askin’, you understand.

Y’see, John McCain’s former friend the Rev. John Hagee (above), whose endorsement McCain ardently pursued but has since renounced,  has said on several occasions that Hurricane Katrina was God’s way of cancelling a gay pride parade that had been set for the very day the big storm hit New Orleans.

Hagee also has suggested that all natural catastrophes are God’s way of dealing with one bad thing or another.

So, it only follows that Hurricane Ike is divinely intended to punish Houston for something Hagee sees as evil. Strangely, however, the good reverend seems to be silent on the matter.

Too bad Jerry Falwell (another of McCain’s good friends) isn’t still around to give us guidance on this situation. It was Falwell, you’ll recall, who joined with Pat Robertson in blaming America for 9/11 because of our libertine attitudes about gays and feminists and what not.

Hey! there are some people who watch Hagee and are not afraid to hear the truth. Does anybody know the story of Sodom and Gomorah.

We should be so lucky that God has not destroyed us yet!

gowader: I’d be surprised if you weren’t an apostle of Hagee. The connection is obvious.

As for Sodom and Gomorrah, it seems that you don’t know the real story. The principal sins of S&G were inhospitality and arrogance, which is what Jesus was talking about in the gospel of Matthew when he said: “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.”

It might interest you to know, gowader, that there is not a single word about homosexuality attributed to Jesus in the Bible.

Oh, yeah, there are condemnations of homosexuality in the Old Testament, but they’re mostly found amid admonitions against eating shellfish, getting tatoos, wearing clothing made of more than one kind of fabric and other such terrible sins. The preachers who cite the stuff about homosexuality never put it in context with these other prohibitions to which very few people pay any attention anymore.

I get a kick out of you religious bigots who don’t even know what’s in the Bible.
