From the-story-is-about-me school of journalism

(This post of a few weeks ago is worth repeating in light of recent developments.)Â
I don’t know who started it — maybe it was Dan Rather (pictured above in some hurricane or another) — but I’m tired of the self-aggrandizing practice among some TV reporters of standing out in the wind and rain to cover big storms.
Video of debris flying around or of idiots who failed to evacuate belatedly running for cover should suffice to convey the message. But, no. Reporters must earn their stripes by hanging on to lampposts lest the wind blow them all the way to some adjoining TV market.
The Washington Post has a GOOD PIECE on this ridiculous phenomenon.

Hoke: Michelle Kosinski (the reporter in the story to which you linked) used to work in Rockford.

I remember her.
She had a bit of a lisp at the time which she’s pretty much gotten rid of.
She was able to get past this embarrasment and is quite the rising star at NBC.

I was happy to see Geraldo take a plunge into the water, while I am sure he thought that amplified his bravado to me it was just one more act of pushing himself in front of the camera. He is a master of that. I agree, this business of seeing who could make it look the most dangerous is uncalled for.
Further isn’t it a shame that in addition to all of the horrendous damage, much of which we will help pay for, we get the added bill for spending hours trying to save the tens of thousands of idiots who had to “wait it out” after they were told by authorities to get out.
