As I write this shortly before midnight on Sunday, the news wires and financial TV networks (such as Bloomberg and CNBC) are abuzz with stories about the extraordinary events of recent hours on Wall Street (see HERE) and their potential effect on the markets come Monday morning.
In a sidebar (if I can use such a trivial term), Politico.com’s Mike Allen has THIS PIECE concerning the potential impact on the presidential race.

John McCain has never said his war injuries prevent him from using computers, but that’s the story Karl Rove is selling.
It’s not true. As the Chicago Tribune’s political blog REPORTED earlier today, McCain “has indicated using e-mails or the Internet was something he just hadn’t gotten around to.”
There’s more on the matter HERE and HERE and HERE. (Warning: Strong language on at least one of the sites to which I’ve linked.)

In a post on its Web site today, Army Times raised the question of whether John McCain has reversed himself regarding a program called Future Combat Systems (represented by the montage above)Â or is falsifying his previous position on the issue.
The story is HERE.

I don’t claim to know anything about this stuff other than what I read, but what I’m reading on this Sunday evening is a little unsettling.
There’s THIS about how new “concerns about the stability of the U.S. financial system sparked talk of emergency liquidity measures by the Federal Reserve…”
And THIS about today having been “one of the most extraordinary days in Wall Street’s history” and about “an 11th-hour deal to avert a deepening financial crisis…”
And this headline on the Wall Street Journal Web site:
Crisis on Wall Street as Lehman Totters,
Merrill Seeks Buyer, AIG Hunts for Cash
U.S. Opts to Avoid Lehman Rescue,
Stirring a Momentous Weekend for American Finance;
Traders Brace for a Chaotic Monday
UPDATE: Greenspan SAYS the U.S. is in a “once-in-a-century” financial crisis.

Hint: He TOLD a national television audience that Sarah Palin has accepted no federal earmarks as governor of Alaska.
In so doing, he…uh…well, to put it as politely as possible, he prevaricated.
Come to think of it, perhaps the best way to tell whether this guy is prevaricating is to see if he’s moving his lips. That’s usually a tip-off.

Wow! Getting called a liar by Karl Rove is like getting called incompetent by George W. Bush.
Even more amazingly, Rove SAID it on Fox News.
UPDATE: Here’s MORE from the ChiTrib’s political blog.

Says the Times: “Political innocents may wonder why a candidate such as McCain, whose campaign is premised on ’straight talk’ — and to a lesser extent Obama — have veered from the truth.”
HERE’s the story.
