For decades now, it’s been standard Republican strategy for the party’s leaders to criticize The New York Times, if only to fire up the GOP faithful, most of whom regard the Times as the house organ of Hades.
So, it was no big surprise when a campaign spokesman for John McCain LASHED OUT at the Times today for its alleged “advocacy” on behalf of Barack Obama.
The attack, however, was remarkable mainly for its many FACTUAL ERRORS.
And there are two other delicious ironies in all of this. 1) The McCain camp often CITES the Times as a reliable source for its own attacks on Obama; and 2) McCain himself has LONG DEPENDED on the Times and his friends there to get his political message across.
Of course, none of these contradictions will ever be recognized by the rank-and-file McCainiacs who need only know that their hero’s aides have rightly given the demon Times its proper comeuppance.

In a country where millions of people are stupid enough to believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim, and 12 percent of adults are stupid enough to believe that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife (no kidding, check HERE), it’s almost impossible to get a reading of zero percent on any polling question.
But on the question of whether the U.S. economy is improving, a NEW POLL conducted by American Research Group got no affirmative reponses. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Oh, all right. The poll had a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points. Maybe one person responded affirmatively — the guy in the above photo, for instance. But the percentage was negligible — and that almost never happens.
UPDATE: Wait a minute! Maybe this was the guy who responded affirmatively:

Several Applesauce commenters have made been making a big deal lately of what they seem to think was a prescient warning from John McCain a few years ago about problems at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The independent Web site PolitiFact.com SAYS McCain’s claims in that regard are a “huge stretch.”

All this talk about election day falling on Nov. 4 is misleading. As much as one-third of the electorate will already have voted by then.
Most states allow EARLY VOTING in one form or another, and balloting begins today in Virginia, Kentucky and Georgia. Early voting here in Illinois begins on Oct. 13.

If Wall Street wonders why it isn’t warmly regarded by the average American these days, it might ponder stuff like THIS.

In my travels around the Rockford area, I’ve seen only a few yard signs touting Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy — mainly because, I figured at first, that Illinois is not a battleground state. Nobody seriously doubts that Obama will prevail here.
But now it turns out that the Obama campaign simply ISN’T BOTHERING much with yard signs in any state or locale. The theory is that they’re not worth the time, effort and expense that could be devoted to more productive activities.
I’m not sure I agree with that notion, but the die is cast.
