Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.” |

John McCain got himself caught up in the Savings & Loan debacle of the late 1980’s and became known as one of the Keating Five, a reference to five lawmakers who did favors for a corrupt S&L operator.
In light of the current banking scandal, there’s a growing buzz about the Keating Five case. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter brought it up last night on Keith Olbermann’s program:

My take on McCain’s role in the Keating Five business is that he screwed up and showed poor judgement. But his culpability in the case strikes me as relatively minor.
I’m not going to get into all the particulars in my narrative here. Rather, I ask you to read THIS ARTICLE in its entirety and judge for yourself whether McCain acted like a crook. I don’t think so.

The writing in THIS PIECE is a little awkward, but the points about Illinois politics and Barack Obama are valid.

Franklin Roosevelt’s name occasionally comes up in the debate over a proposed bailout of Wall Street.
John Halpin has some INTERESTING THOUGHTS on FDR and the current situation.

Columnist and commentator George Will SAYS John McCain is “childish” and is “behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high.”
The argument can be made, Will submits, that “McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency.”
