A quickie poll by Survey USA suggests SPARSE PUBLIC SUPPORT for John McCain’s idea of postponing Friday night’s presidential debate and suspending the campaign in light of the financial crisis.
POSTSCRIPT: It seems to me that this poll is a bit premature to accurately measure public sentiment on McCain’s proposal. At this writing, most Americans haven’t ever heard about the matter. Public sentiment could shift McCain’s way over the next day or so.
On the other hand, many Americans could also take a cynical view of the candidate who’s running behind in the polls suddenly wanting to call a time out.
UPDATE: Here’s Barack Obama’s response to McCain’s proposal:

HERE’s the story.

There’s a lot of factors to consider in the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, which SHOWS Barack Obama leading John McCain by 9 percentage points.
I was especially struck by this finding: “Whites without college degrees favor McCain by 17 points, while those with college degrees support Obama by 9 points.”
And there was this: “McCain’s once-sizable advantage in dealing with the battle against terrorism has all but disappeared. There were also big shifts toward Obama on handling Iraq and international affairs more broadly.”
And this: Obama “also now holds a double-digit lead as the more honest and trustworthy candidate, flipping what had been a slight McCain edge two weeks ago.”Â
UPDATE: A passel of OTHER POLLS show Obama with wide leads over McCain on economic issues.

It says HERE that the Wall Street bailout plan can’t win congressional approval if John McCain doesn’t vote for it.
But former House Speaker Newt Gingrich SAYS the bailout is a political loser and warns McCain against embracing it.
Clearly, there are downsides for McCain no matter what he does, especially with polls SHOWING that the American public blames Republicans, by a 2-to-1 margin, for the financial crisis.

The CNN anchor SAYS the McCain campaign should “stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower that will wilt at any moment.”
As someone once said in another context, you’re doing a heckuva job, Brownie.
UPDATE: Here’s a YouTube video of Brown’s comments:
