Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

Poll shows most Americans opposed to delaying debate and suspending campaign

A quickie poll by Survey USA suggests SPARSE PUBLIC SUPPORT for John McCain’s idea of postponing Friday night’s presidential debate and suspending the campaign in light of the financial crisis.

POSTSCRIPT: It seems to me that this poll is a bit premature to accurately measure public sentiment on McCain’s proposal.  At this writing, most Americans haven’t ever heard about the matter. Public sentiment could shift McCain’s way over the next day or so.

On the other hand, many Americans could also take a cynical view of the candidate who’s running behind in the polls suddenly wanting to call a time out.

UPDATE: Here’s Barack Obama’s response to McCain’s proposal:

If thats the case Pat…why’d you even bother to post it?

    Is it DUCK season already?

David Letterman summed it all up quite nicely during the taping of his show earlier this afternoon:

“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”

Were the mock debate sessions really going that poorly, Sen. McCain? We know that you’re completely lost without your handy dandy index cards, but you’re going to have to square off with Sen. Obama eventually.

My guess is that most Americans will see this for what it is — a desperate attempt to stop hemorrhaging poll numbers.

    Maverick, my foot.

Wanna bet Mc wants to reschedule for next week and suspend the VP debate? There is no way Mc is ready for Friday, and hear the word “economy” and talk about the horrible condition it is in, when just a short time ago he said our economy is fundamentally sound. I’m hoping Obama picks his bones clean.

oh yeah Obama is a great speaker without his teleprompter. I can’t wait him go um..ah..um..well what ahh.

  • 6. Pat Cunningham  |  September 24th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

DingDong, who doesn’t write very well, is dissing Obama’s widely recognized oratorical skills — and he’s doing it in defense of McCain, who’s a weaker public speaker than George W. Bush. Too too funny!

David Johnson: The sole reason I bothered to post this survey was to bug you. It worked.

DingDong. No, that’s GWB that talks like that. And by the way, McCain can’t say 2 words without looking down at his notes. Or Palin’s rear!!

John McCain said he’d go through with the debate on Friday if the bailout was completed first. So he’s expecting a $700B financing plan to be completed in TWO DAYS. This includes balance sheets, discovery, due diligence, negotiations, lawyers, etc. In TWO DAYS. Yeah, right. McCain knows that isn’t possible and that’s why he said it. That way it won’t look like he’s ducking the debate. Well it didn’t work.

You amuse me Pat. and I do find you annoying. But you don’t have to have to do anything deliberately to do that…your gross hypocrisy takes care of that just fine…so you don’t have to use me as an excuse for your actions. I do want to comment on some of these sophomoric posts though. I truly believe the reason our country is in the shape it’s in is because we continue to send “politicians” instead of “statesmen” to Washington. For some of you nimble brained posters the difference is that a “politician” will do whatever is politically expedient to further his career. A “Statesman” will take the long view of what’s best for the country. John McCain has completely suspended his campaign…including all commercials and fundraising. He’s going to Washington to do what he’s done for many years…assist in bringing the People at least some sort of solution to a very real and ominous problem. While I have issues with some of the things he’s promoted in the past…I respect him enormously for having the courage and statesmanship to stand his ground. Our “junior” Senator has spent so little time in Washington since we sent him there that he’ll likely need a GPS to find his office…and again when he has to find his way down to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. Obama’s answer to problem resolution…”if you need me…call me”. Yep…that’s leadership for ya.

David. Speaking of sophomoric posts, your last few sentences fit that description!!

Tinfoil hat time: The proposed bill includes a couple pieces of crazy by design. McCain will ride in on his white horse, wave his maverick wand and the crazy will disappear. I suspect we’ll hear that McCain had a private meeting or phone call with George W Bush and that was the key. Then the GOP will hail McCain as the savior of our economy.

    Tinfoil hat off.

I guess McCain has changed his mind on suspending the campaign.
I just saw a McCain ad on NBC.
Oh, and the McCain camp’s latest date pick for the postponed debate? Oct 2. The date that the first VP debate was scheduled.

  • 14. Milton Waddams  |  September 25th, 2008 at 8:32 am

    Yep…that’s leadership for ya.

Yes, it’s called delegating. A very common trait of successful leaders.

Give me a break. McCain is trying to duck the debate. No one who is involved with actually involved with the working committees sees this as anything other than a desparate political stunt. it is sad to see such an honorable man (Keating Five) reduced to this level. Last week he didn’t know there was a crisis. Now he thinks he can help. Come on John, show us you can chew gum and walk at the same time.

“For some of you nimble brained posters ”

That’s a sure way to keep people from reading any further.

    SpekleMe:

“That’s a sure way to keep people from reading any further.”

That word he is using, I do not think it means what you think it means.
