CNN had five analysts rate the performance of both candidates. Two were neutral, one was a Dem strategist, and two were GOP strategists. The overall conclusion was it was a draw, even though the panel was slightly tilted to the right. Only one of them, a Repub strategist, thought McCain won outright. And after the debate, McCain’s campaign manager said she thought he won outright as well. But then if she hadn’t, he’d probably can her.

Chuck: I’m highlighting the irony of Obama faring well in a focus group assembled by GOP pollster Frank Luntz and aired on Fox News, of all places. It goes against expectations. As for the Drudge poll, it’s worthless, as are all polls in which the sample is self-selected. The Internet also has more than a few liberal versions of such phony polls. In short, if the poll ain’t scientific, it ain’t worth our attention. I’d say the same if the Drudge poll showed a huge majority giving the nod to Obama. Actually, the more I think about it, I probably shouldn’t have posted anything about Luntz’s focus group. I’ve never put much stock in focus groups (although, as you probably know, they’re frequently used by media companies in their decision-making processes.)

: That was no slam dunk for O. He maybe fared a little better on the economy portion, but McCain was better on the foreign policy part. Drudge’s nonscientific poll has McCain far ahead. So it’s probably a draw,
