Applesauce
Pat Cunningham offers an unabashedly liberal perspective on national politics. A note of caution: The language gets a litttle salty on some of the sites to which this blog links. So, don’t say you weren’t warned. By the way, this blog’s name is inspired by the Will Rogers quote, “All politics is applesauce.”

The 2nd Amendment isn’t about hunting or target shooting. It is about the right to defend yourself, your family, and your property. If you can’t do that, you have no rights.

As to Obama’s record on gun control, these people are deluded, if they think supports gun ownership in any significant way.. He supported the Washington,DC gun ban, until it was overturned by the Supreme Court. Then the Obama campaign started backtracking from last year’s declarative statement supporting the handgun law (”Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional”), calling it “inartful.” More examples:

This is the real Barack Obama:

“I’m consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.”
    Chicago Tribune, 4/27/04

“I think it’s a scandal that this president (Bush) did not authorize a renewal of the assault weapons ban.”
Illinois Senate Debate #3: Barack Obama vs. Alan Keyes, 10/21/04

“I believe in keeping guns out of our inner cities and that our leaders must say so in the face of the gun manufacturers lobby.”
The Audacity of Hope, by Barack Obama, 2006

“I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country.” (gun ownership and restrictions on guns)
    Politico, 2/11/08

“I think that local jurisdictions have the capability to institute their own gun laws.”
    BaltimoreSun.com, 2/15/08

Q: When you were in the state senate, you talked about licensing and registering gun owners. Would you do that as president?
A: I don’t think that we can get that done.

    From Senator Obama’s acceptance speach:

The — the reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.

First, it is already illegal for criminals to own guns, since 1938. It has been illegal for ANYONE to own a fully-automatic weapon without a Federal Permit, since 1934. But if you live in Chicago, only the CRIMINALS (and the police) have guns.

Obama has consinstantly scored an \\\\"F\\\\" rating from the NRA. I fail to see any reason he\\\\\\\’d become less anti-gun when he gets in the White House.

The sportsmen appearing in this video (Colin Walsh, “Roger,”, and Ray Schoenke) are definitely well-informed and state their case quite eloquently, without resorting to histrionics, hubris, and pry-my-AK-47-from-my-dead-hands antics. What a refreshing change from NRA poster boy Ted Nugent.

Those “sportsmen” might be upset to find that, in 1998, Obama supported a ban on the sale of ALL semiautomatic guns, which includes the semi-automatic shotguns that some of his supporters were shooting during the video. No histrionics or hubris, just facts.

And speaking of facts, did you miss my post, which CLEARLY states that ALL fully-automatic weapons (including the AK-47 you mention) are illegal to own, and have been since 1934, unless you have the proper FEDERAL permit?

“…ALL fully-automatic weapons (including the AK-47 you mention) are illegal to own, and have been since 1934, unless you have the proper FEDERAL permit…” Yes, fully automatic weapons are illegal. What’s your point? Semi-automatic assault rifles are not. And there are thousands of semi-automatic AK-47s in the U.S. which some of their owners are trying to pass off as “sporting” weapons. I’ve even seen them for sale in a local hardware store, complete with banana clip and bipod. The same hardware also sold .50 cal sniper rifles. Another “sporting” weapon. The Tech-9s the creeps at Coumbine H.S. were also semi-automatic “sporting” weapons, weren’t they? Serious sportsment know these things are NOT sporting weapons. But apparently it offends you when a few of them have the guts to say so. As for me, I had too many friends, neighbors, classmates, relatives, co-workers, etc. shot at and sometimes shot by AK-47s in Vietnam. I find them offensive.

Then don’t look at them. The type of gun isn’t the problem, it is the person pulling the trigger. As to the “assault weapon” ban, the differences are virtually all cosmetic.
If I put a spoiler and NASCAR graphics on a Buick LeSabre, it doesn’t make it a 200mph race car. As to what the guns are used for , what the hell do YOU care, so long as they are used LEGALLY? If I want to blow off $100 worth of ammo at the range with a semi-auto assault weapon replica, so what? If I want to shoot targets at 1000 yards, so what? It doesn’t hurt you in the least. What YOU should worry about is the Far-Lefties legislating the public into a herd of defenseless sheep, because only they know what is best for us.
